Job summary

BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. invites an Electrical Designer to join the Peterborough, Ontario team. You will participate in the design and drafting of automated and semi-automated equipment for fuel handling and reactor maintenance systems.

The role requires AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical and Inventor experience, plus strong English communication and teamwork. 5+ years in electrical design and Canadian nuclear industry exposure are assets.

Qualifications

  • Electrical/Electronic engineering tech diploma required with related drafting experience.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical and Inventor essential; SolidWorks a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication; ability to work in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop concept designs into detailed drawings and BOMs using CAD tools.
  • Collaborate with Professional Engineers and Technologists across disciplines.
  • Produce assembly drawings, wiring diagrams and interconnection block diagrams.
  • Select instrumentation and control components per project requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and liaise with customers for site information.
  • Support multiple projects with cost and schedule awareness.

Electrical Designer
We are looking for an Electrical Designer for our Peterborough, Ontario site.
BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry's most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Design Services Manager, responsibilities of the designer performing this role include supporting the technical direction for the overall project, interfacing with both external and internal customers including the Instrumentation and Controls Engineering department. Electrical designers participate in the development and drafting of designs for automated and semi-automated equipment.
The Design Services department uses such tools as AutoCAD®, AutoCAD Electrical®, IntEC® and Inventor® to create concept drawings, detailed designs, elementary drawings, BOMs, wiring diagrams and can also provide design replacement solutions for obsolete components such as relays, motors and circuit cards.
Responsibilities

  • Develop concept designs into detail drawings & bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product using CAD packages including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and Autodesk Inventor.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment with teams of Professional Engineers and Technologists.
  • Produce and update general assembly drawings, interconnection block diagrams, functional block diagrams, cable assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, wiring lists, and bills of material.
  • Selection of instrumentation, control, and power components based on Engineering requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and occasional customer review meetings, providing resource information and design input.
  • Liaise with customer design and operations personnel to gather site-specific design information.
  • Assist others on specific projects.
  • Accountable for cost and schedule on assigned projects.
Required
  • Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology diploma.
  • AutoCAD and Solidworks experience required, AutoCAD Electrical and Inventor experience an asset.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills understandable by a diverse audience
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Possess working knowledge of fundamental drafting technique.
  • Must be able to multitask and work with minimal supervision.
  • Competence in control system design and design processes.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work in a project team.
  • Intec or Online wiring experience is an asset
  • 3D parametric modeling experience is an asset.
  • Understanding of a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, software design, systems engineering and manufacturing.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, developing leadership skills and the ability to work in a team.

Desired
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience in design of electrical systems with previous electrical and controls design drafting experience.
  • Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or greater qualification.
  • Membership in OACETT or other certifying organization.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.
  • General understanding of Engineering Change Control (ECC) concepts for the nuclear industry or other industries.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $68,000.00 and $108,551.30 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
