Job summary

ISL Engineering seeks an Electrical and Controls Engineer/Technologist to lead electrical, instrumentation and controls design for infrastructure projects in Western Canada. The role suits someone who enjoys technical design, coordination, field problem solving, and seeing projects through construction and commissioning.

You will develop drawings, specifications, reports, and cost estimates, coordinating with clients and multidisciplinary teams. Travel to project sites will be required.

Qualifications

• Experience on electrical design deliverables including drawings, specs, reports and cost estimates.
• Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and electrical design standards.
• Willingness to travel for site reviews, commissioning and client meetings.
• Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities.
• Experience with construction support, commissioning and startup of projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop drawings, specifications, design memoranda, cost estimates, procurement documents, and technical reports.
• Prepare and coordinate electrical, instrumentation, and controls design packages.
• Design systems for power distribution, motor controls, MCCs, VFDs, generators, ATS, lighting, instrumentation, PLC panels, networks.
• Support construction administration, shop drawing reviews, RFIs, and site reviews.
• Coordinate with clients, owners, operators, contractors, OEMs and internal project teams.

About The Role

As an Electrical and Controls Engineer/Technologist, you will support and lead electrical, instrumentation, and controls design for infrastructure projects. This role is suited to an engineer/technologist who enjoys technical design, coordination, field problem solving, and seeing projects through construction and commissioning.

• Develop drawings, specifications, design memoranda, cost estimates, procurement documents, and technical reports.
• Prepare and coordinate electrical, instrumentation, and controls design packages.
• Design systems for power distribution, motor controls, MCCs, VFDs, generators, ATS equipment, lighting, instrumentation, PLC panels, communication networks, and related systems.
• Support construction administration, shop drawing reviews, RFIs, site reviews, commissioning, startup, operator training, and deficiency resolution.
• Coordinate with clients, owners, operators, contractors, OEMs, system integrators, and internal project teams.
• Use ISL quality procedures to check work, document decisions, and support consistent technical delivery.
• Support proposals, scopes of work, fee estimates, and responses to RFPs when needed.

• You have worked on electrical and controls projects and can speak to the types of systems, facilities, or environments you have supported.
• Your experience may include design, construction support, commissioning, field review, troubleshooting, or hands‑on project work.
• You have experience with AutoCAD or other design tools used to support electrical, controls, or automation design.
• You may have worked with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, historians, alarm notification systems, communication networks, or systems integration platforms.
• You understand that successful project work depends on strong collaboration, clear communication, quality, responsiveness, and client service.
• You are interested in growing your career in a role that brings electrical design, controls, operator interfaces, communication networks, commissioning, and operations together.
• You have a passion for programming experience and have worked with automation platforms. You would be excited to nerd out with other team members on the types of platforms you have used.

Your Cover Letter Should Include

• An example of an electrical, instrumentation, or controls project you have designed or led through construction and commissioning, and any PLC, HMI or SCADA platforms you have used.

Your Resume Must Display

• P.Eng. or P.Tech. (Eng.) designation in Alberta or British Columbia, or eligibility for registration with APEGA or EGBC or equivalent.
• Degree or diploma in electrical engineering from an accredited post‑secondary institution.
• Approximately 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, controls engineering, instrumentation, or related field. Experience in consulting engineering is preferred.
• Experience preparing or coordinating electrical design deliverables, including drawings, specifications, reports, cost estimates, technical memoranda, and construction documents.
• Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and applicable electrical design standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a practical, client‑focused approach.
• Ability to travel for site reviews, field investigations, construction support, commissioning, and client meetings.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities across active projects.

Assets

• Programming/configuration experience with platforms such as Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Omron, GE, Emerson, Ignition, VTScada or Wonderware.
• Project management experience.
• Experience with municipal water, wastewater, stormwater, pump stations, lift stations, reservoirs, treatment facilities, or industrial process systems is a big bonus.
• Exposure to systems integration, control narratives, alarm strategies, historian configuration, data logging, trending, operator interface design, operator training, or commissioning of automated systems.

• $125,000 to $130,000 per annum
