Job Description
  • Produce detailed engineering drawings, site directives, material lists and other related documents for the design of electrical arrangements utilized in electrical power generation, transmission, transformation and distribution systems;
  • Provide engineering support for procurement, fabrication and construction activities;
  • Provide field supervision and/or monitoring of projects;
  • Review shop drawings and interface with equipment vendors;
  • Estimate construction (labor and material) costs;
  • Conduct site surveys, inspections or technical investigations to provide data for engineering projects (Note: Must be able to wear personal protective equipment: hard hat, safety glasses, safety footwear, fire-retardant clothing, hearing protection, etc. as dictated by provincial and site-specific safety requirements);
  • Review the work of the draftsperson and other technicians;
  • Produce drawings according to the drawing’s standards of the company, the customer and the applicable regulatory agencies;
  • Perform other administrative and technical functions in support of engineering activities;
  • Provide support for compliance activities such as document control, quality control, process improvement, etc.;
  • Comply with the health and safety duties for a worker as mandated by the Ontario Health and Safety Act, Section 28 and work in compliance with the provisions of this Act and its regulations.
Qualifications
  • Diploma, with 2 or more years of post-secondary education in electrical disciplines;
  • 0 to 3 years of experience in utility substation design or related electrical arrangement projects;
  • Hands-on experience with transformer, breaker, and disconnect switch installation design for 230kV, 115kV, and 27.6kV utility applications;
  • Familiarity with station AC and DC auxiliary services design;
  • Strong knowledge of electrical equipment and materials used in high-voltage substations, including bills of material and cable lists;
  • Solid understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of electrical arrangement design;
  • Ability to interpret and produce electrical arrangement plan, elevations and details accurately;
  • Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, structural/civil/mechanical design drawings accurately;
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D & 3D) and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Experience with BIM tools or 3D modeling software (e.g., Revit) for integrated design workflows;
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical standards and regulations (CSA, IEEE, IEC);
  • Familiarity with project documentation standards and quality assurance processes;
  • Understanding of electrical protection and control systems for substations and industrial facilities;
  • Demonstrated technical skills: teamwork, problem-solving, time management, adaptability, and clear communication (written and verbal);
  • Previous experience with public utilities is an asset;
  • Strong attention to detail for producing precise and accurate drawings;
  • Keen observation skills, curiosity, and ingenuity in design;
  • Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams (protection & control, telecom, civil, structural, mechanical);
  • Organizational skills for managing multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Basic knowledge of project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) for scheduling and coordination;
  • Comfortable with client interactions and clarifying technical requirements;
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on emerging technologies in electrical design.
