Job summary

Veolia North America in Burnaby, BC, is seeking an Instrumentation & Electrical Technician to install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair plant instrumentation, control systems, electrical equipment, and related ancillary gear, with strict safety compliance.

The role requires Interprovincial/Red Seal as Industrial Electrician or I&C Technician, 5+ years in industrial settings, and PLC/DCS/HMI programming skills.

Qualifications

  • Must hold an Interprovincial/Red Seal Trade Qualification as an Industrial Electrician and/or Instrumentation and Control Technician.
  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical (LV/MV/HV) and instrumentation & control systems.
  • Proficient in programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting PLCs, DCS, and HMI systems.
  • Experience with CMMS documentation and workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot industrial instrumentation, electrical, and control systems (CEMS, transmitters, analyzers, valves, controllers, PLCs, relays).
  • Maintain and support power generation and plant auxiliary equipment (boilers, turbines, generators).
  • Interpret P&IDs and electrical schematics for maintenance and improvements.
  • Monitor instrumentation drift and alarms; perform testing and calibration.
  • Manage maintenance documentation in CMMS, logging tasks and parts usage.
  • Coordinate with operations and contractors during installations, start-ups, and shutdowns.

Job Description

The Instrumentation & Electrical Technician (I&E Tech) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing,
troubleshooting, and repair of all plant instrumentation, control systems, electrical machinery, and related auxiliary equipment, all while strictly adhering to the highest safety standards.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot industrial instrumentation, electrical, and control systems, including continuous emissions monitoring (CEMS), transmitters, analyzers, control valves, controllers, PLCs, and protective relays.
  • Maintain and support power generation and plant auxiliary equipment, including boiler, steam turbine and generator, by analyzing and resolving complex system issues to minimize downtime.
  • Interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, control system drawings, technical manuals, and blueprints to perform corrective maintenance, overhauls, and system improvements in accordance with codes and standards.
  • Prevent equipment breakdowns by monitoring instrumentation drift, alarm patterns, and operational signals, utilizing advanced diagnostic equipment for precise testing and calibration.
  • Manage maintenance documentation via the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), ensuring accurate logging of tasks, work orders, parts usage, and time allocation.
  • Coordinate with operations, maintenance, engineering teams, and external contractors during installations, start-ups, and shutdowns; communicate equipment status and safety concerns clearly to all stakeholders.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety standards, including LOTO, confined space entry, hot work permits, Field Level Risk Assessments, and OHS regulations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to maximize equipment uptime, reliability, and support continuous improvement and change management initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Candidates must hold an Interprovincial/Red Seal Trade Qualification as an Industrial Electrician and/or Instrumentation and Control Technician. A minimum of five years of experience in industrial environments-such as power generation, chemical processing, 1 Standard JD Template Revised Date: August 2019 or pulp and paper facilities-is required. Relevant additional certifications and qualifications are considered assets.
  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical (LV/MV/HV) and instrumentation & control systems, including voltage/current principles
  • Proficiency in programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting PLCs, DCS, and HMI systems.
  • Expertise in inspecting, diagnosing, and calibrating process instrumentation using multimeters, loop calibrators, and diagnostic tools.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex electrical/instrumentation issues and implement effective corrective actions while adhering to safety policies.
  • Demonstrated skill in estimating time and material requirements for projects.
  • Proficient in utilizing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for documentation and workflow
  • Highly organized with strong planning and problem-solving abilities; capable of managing multiple tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Collaborative team player with a strong focus on adaptability, safety, and continuous improvement.
Work Environment:

Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Schedule: 4-day work weeks with 9-hour shifts on a rotating schedule across 3 teams to ensure 7-day operational coverage.

Salary: 61.16$/h

The role necessitates working both indoors and outdoors for prolonged and frequent periods, exposing the individual to all weather conditions and extremes, as well as a waste environment. The position requires continuous walking, standing, and climbing, working in heights, and frequent periods in sustained, physically uncomfortable positions. Regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion are required, including the ability to lift, carry, and position heavy objects using proper body mechanics and techniques. Operation of tools and equipment that generating loud noise and vibrations is also involved. Candidate selected must have Ability to kneel, crawl and climb and tolerate heights up to 75 feet and to tolerate confined spaces including but not limited to manholes and boilers and ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
