Qualifications

Position Overview

Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Leader develops and facilitates the implementation and coordination of policies, procedures and programs to protect our team members and promote the highest standards of EHS within Novelis Kingston.

The successful EHS Leader will maintain an active presence on the shop floor to foster strong relationships within the plant. This team member will work strategically outside of EHS to collaborate with other functions such as: Operations/Production, Maintenance, Quality, Reliability, Engineering, Human Resources, Procurement, and Legal.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Site Leadership and team to ensure consistent application of EHS related policies and practices. Communicate incidents or policy changes.
  • Lead compliance within our EHS Management System, in addition to regulatory, and Novelis requirements by participating in, and supporting, audits.
  • Be present on the shop floor daily, engaging in conversation, collecting feedback, and actively seeking to understand team member perspectives.
  • Act as a resource and mentor to all partners at the plant.
  • Implement Novelis EHS strategy and other strategic objectives, as directed by head office or by local plant initiatives.
  • Prioritize and balance multiple and simultaneous activities to meet demands of the job within allocated timeframes.
  • Promote a collaborative EHS culture, acquiring cooperation and involvement from Leaders and team members who have concerns and/or ideas for change.
  • Participate in continuous improvement exercises, using the experiences and knowledge of others to build sustainable solutions.
  • Work with the Education & Training Pillar to develop EHS training matrix and facilitate training programs.
  • Apply our cultural values in all undertakings, with a commitment to personal growth and self-awareness.
  • In general, the position acts as an EHS champion, strategic partner and internal consultant.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Safety Engineering, Environmental Science or related field required.
  • Previous leadership experience in an EHS position in a collaborative, industrial, setting.
  • Extensive knowledge and skill in development, implementation and maintenance of health and safety programs/activities and procedures.
  • Experience with EHS Management Systems (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 45001) and EHS auditing.
  • Skills Needed to Excel in Position Include:
  • Interpersonal skills to build a culture of safety, influence others and be a safety advocate throughout the plant.
  • Being an active listener, speaking candidly with others, challenging respectfully and always following up on actions or feedback.
  • High degree of proficiency in computer software applications with a detailed approach to policy & procedure documentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work well within all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to address large groups for presentations and training.
  • Ability to multi-task, quickly adapt to change, and work with minimal direction.
  • Ability to interpret regulations and apply the content to operations.
  • A continuous improvement approach to building a culture of safety through influence and employee engagement.

Novelis – Kingston Works is situated on the traditional homeland of the Haudenosaunee Anishinaabe and Huron-Wendat peoples. We thank them for their ongoing stewardship of this land where we are fortunate to work.

We are located on the eastern end of Lake Ontario an area famous for its historical significance and breathtaking 1000 islands views. Kingston is midway between Toronto and Montreal and home to three world class higher learning institutions and many historic sites. Here 300 employees cold roll finish and anneal aluminum used in automotive and specialty products for a wide array of customers in North America.
