The Burnaby School District is on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Nations of Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish.

The Burnaby School District is the fourth largest in BC. The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, including a range of district and provincial resource programs. The District supports and provides learning to 25,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) students and to more than 6,000 adult learners through our established Burnaby Community & Continuing Education program. The District is seeking an experienced HR Manager of Attendance and Wellness to join its Human Resources Team. This position is regular full time (1.00 FTE) position. Reporting to the Executive Director of Human Resources, the Human Resources Manager – Attendance & Wellness plays a strategic leadership role in the development, implementation, and oversight of attendance management, disability support, and employee health and wellness programs across the district. This position is responsible for managing attendance programs, non-occupational leaves, guiding return-to-work processes, and promoting proactive wellness initiatives in alignment with organizational needs and legislative requirements. This role works closely with internal stakeholders, unions, healthcare providers, and external service partners to support employee attendance, return-to-work efforts, and overall well-being.

A HR Manager Of Attendance And Wellness In Burnaby

  • Lead the ongoing development and improvement of attendance management, disability management, and wellness initiatives across the organization, ensuring alignment with operational goals and industry best practices.
  • Provide strategic direction and guidance on attendance and disability ensuring consistency with collective agreements and applicable legislation.
  • Coach and advise managers and HR staff on attendance, disability, and wellness protocols, documentation standards, and employee engagement strategies.
  • Analyze attendance and leaves and claims data to identify trends, support decision- making, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including the Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, and Duty to Accommodate obligations.
  • Develop and implement resources, tools, and training materials to support consistent, legally compliant, and compassionate case management.
  • Collaborate with Joint Health & Wellness Committees, union representatives, and other stakeholders to foster a supportive workplace culture.
  • Manage non-occupational leaves and return-to-work accommodations in collaboration with the Health and Wellness Coordinator, employees, healthcare providers, and disability management partners.
  • Support broader human resources projects as assigned.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent education in Human Resources Management or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive HR experience, including work in wellness, disability management, and labour relations within a unionized environment; experience in the public or education sector is considered an asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of attendance management, disability support, and wellness strategies.
  • Proficiency in data analytics, case documentation, and HRIS platforms (e.g., SRB Report Writer or similar).
  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation and best practices related to HR, return-to- work, accommodation, and employee wellness.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to manage time effectively, prioritize competing demands, and plan workflows to meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent judgment, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation and conflict resolution abilities.

The starting annual salary range for this role is $102,000-$114,751. When determining salary, years of education and experience will be considered. Further details will be discussed in a personal interview. We also offer a competitive benefits package and pension.
