Job description

Transdev Canada is hiring Spare Para-Transit Operators for our Yellowknife location.

As a Spare Para-Transit Operator, you will be responsible on transporting passengers with disabilities on accessible transit vehicles while ensuring their safety and comfort.

Your Role

  • Operate paratransit vehicles safely and courteously in various road and weather conditions, adhering to traffic laws and Transdev policies.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting any mechanical issues promptly.
  • Provide assistance to passengers from their door to the vehicle and from the vehicle to their destination door, ensuring a clear and safe path.
  • Assist passengers in boarding and disembarking, including the operation of lifts or ramps as needed.
  • Secure mobility devices such as wheelchairs and walkers using appropriate restraint systems.
  • Ensure all passengers are safely seated and secured before moving the vehicle.
  • Communicate delays or service interruptions to dispatch immediately.
  • Monitor passenger well-being throughout the trip and respond appropriately to any emergencies or incidents.

  • Provide information about the service as needed and handle customer concerns professionally.
  • Follow assigned schedules and manifests accurately, maintaining punctuality for pickups and drop-offs.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily trips, mileage, incidents, and any passenger-related issues.
  • Monitor fare evasion and report repeated issues to supervisors.
  • Report cancellations, no-shows, and late arrivals in accordance with YATS/YKFlex policies.
  • Report mechanical issues or maintenance needs through the appropriate channels.
  • Keep assigned vehicle clean and presentable during the shift.
  • Report vandalism or cleanliness issues to maintenance promptly.
  • Comply with all Transdev Yellowknife, territorial, and federal transportation policies and regulations.
  • Participate in all required training sessions, including those related to accessibility, safety, and customer service.
  • Display professionalism at all times as a representative of Transdev Yellowknife.
  • Stay informed about updates to YATS/YKFlex policies and procedures.

Your Profile

  • A valid Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License.
  • A clean driving record with no major infractions in the past 3 years.
  • Minimum 1 year of commercial or professional driving experience preferred (e.g., school bus, transit, or paratransit services).
  • Experience working with seniors, individuals with disabilities, or in customer-facing roles is considered a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with Yellowknife roads and weather conditions is preferred.
  • Demonstrates commitment to safe driving practices and securement of mobility devices.
  • Understands emergency procedures and incident response.
  • Empathetic and patient approach to riders with disabilities or health conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to engage with passengers of all backgrounds.
  • Capable of operating vehicle lifts/ramps, securing wheelchairs, and using onboard communication devices.
  • Good judgment and decision-making in handling unexpected road or passenger situations.
  • Punctuality and reliability, with the ability to follow strict schedules and adjust efficiently to delays or last-minute changes.
  • The ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, split shifts, evenings, and weekends.
  • A strong understanding of Workplace Safety and Health Act regulations related to transit operations.
  • Can complete trip logs, incident reports, and other paperwork clearly and accurately.
  • Understands and applies YATS/YKFlex service rules (e.g., one destination per trip, attendant policy, no smoking, etc.).
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in public transit.
  • The ability to pass a vulnerable sector records check and drug/alcohol testing.

  • This is a casual, non-unionized position in Yellowknife.
  • Transit environment: early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
