Job Summary

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (“SR&ED”) Manager (“Manager”) is responsible for assisting clients in identifying and claiming SR&ED tax credits and then assisting the SR&ED Director in defending those credits when necessary in the context of a review by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The work is project-based and sometimes requires the team to spend time onsite at client facilities, working with engineers and technical personnel. This role includes performing and supervising tasks such as researching tax law, documenting expense treatment, and completing detailed models and calculations.

Duties and Responsibilities

People:

  • Create a positive team member experience.
  • Collaborate with the firm’s key technical advisors on the ongoing development of the firm’s tools for preparing SR&ED claims.
  • Assist the practice Principal in preparing client presentations for proposals, planning strategies, and ideas.
  • Assist the SR&ED Director in developing project work plans and scheduling associated project deliverables.

Client:

  • Interview clients, uncovering all SR&ED eligible projects and all information required to prepare the T661 filing.
  • Advise and support clients before and during any CRA technical review for SR&ED tax credit claims, and respond to correspondence initiated by CRA regarding technology aspects of the submitted SR&ED claim, if any.

Value:

  • Prepare the technical narratives for SR&ED tax credit claims of clients, including the identification of specific employees, subcontractors, and materials expended in connection with the eligible activities identified, and determining the amount of effort relating thereto.
  • Ensure all claims are prepared, signed off by the SR&ED Director and the clients, and completed for CRA filing within 45 days of the initial technical meeting.
  • Record all client interviews and save the recordings in Ryan’s central file service.
  • Gather samples of client supporting documents as claims are prepared.
  • Participate in sales activities and attend, from time to time, sales and business development meetings with the firm’s SR&ED practice Principal and business development professionals.
  • Track time by client and activity codes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical or related disciplines) or Science, related industry experience, and a minimum of four years of SR&ED tax credit experience required. Must have excellent organization and time management skills, strong communication skills, and a willingness to learn and be a team player.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet navigation and research.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid driver’s license required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may require supervisory responsibilities, including training peers and checking work for accuracy and completeness.

Work Environment:

  • Standard indoor working environment.
  • Occasional long periods of sitting while working at a computer.
  • Position requires regular interaction with employees at all levels of the Firm; interface with clients and external vendors as necessary.
  • Independent travel requirement: 0 to 10%.
  • 40+ hour standard workweek requirement.
