Home Campus: Fennell (hybrid work arrangements available – minimum 3 days per week on-site)
Rate of Pay: Payband H (Start Rate: $36.29 per hour, plus 8% in lieu of vacation and benefits)

The Student Development Coordinator, Orientation & Transition will lead the development, coordination, promotion, and facilitation of Mohawk College’s student orientation, mentorship and first year experience programming designed to support the personal, academic, social and developmental growth and success of Mohawk students. This includes using current research and best practices in student affairs & development and universal design for learning to develop student learning outcomes and inform programmatic initiatives.
In their role, the incumbent will develop workshops and asynchronous material to facilitate training of students in designated leadership roles such as student mentors and MoCrew student staff, and, following training, will provide functional guidance and in-service training to the same as they fulfill their obligations as student leaders.

What you’ll be doing:
Student Leadership
- Coordinate, implement and assess Mohawk Student Leadership Development & Academy programming which may be delivered in-person, virtually or in a combination of synchronous/asynchronous formats
- Conduct research and consult with subject matter experts to lead the design and facilitation of workshops and training session to foster student leadership development
- Connect with campus partners to recruit employee and community facilitators for workshops and training sessions as required
- Promote student leadership programming to recruit participants and encourage full program engagement
- Conduct annual program assessment and review to provide recommendations to the Director
- Participate in communities of practice, conduct research on student development theory and experiential learning, remain current in best practices in student leadership
- Chairs departmental meetings to inform curriculum and program design as well as to coordinate staff engagement in initiatives
- Respond to student and staff inquiries in-person, via email, and phone
- Assist Events Coordinator with the promotion of the Celebration of Learning Awards for MoSpirit (leadership) and Co-Curricular Record (student volunteerism)
Student Mentorship
- Assess student need and best practices to design, implement, promote and assess Student Mentorship peer-to-peer engagement programming in support of student development
- This includes first-year student experience and transition for new student mentees & student leadership coaching and development for upper year mentors/facilitators
For new student mentees:
- Design and implement quality program to be delivered via a peer-to-peer engagement model
- Develop content in partnership with subject matter experts and in alignment with student lifecycle needs to encourage academic, social, personal and developmental success of program participants
- Coordinates mentee engagement initiatives
- Develops and implements session content
For upper year mentors:
- Recruit upper year mentors who will facilitate peer-to-peer engagement programming and support
- Develop and facilitate mentor training to ensure quality experience for mentor and mentees
- Promote opportunities for in-service training, engagement and development
- Provide functional guidance to paid Student Mentorship Leads and Student Mentor volunteers
- Track engagement and duties performed to inform end of term assessment and compensation
First Year Experience (FYE) & Orientation Activities
- Lead the coordination, under the general director of the Director, of Orientation activities each term (Fall, Winter, Spring)
- Collaborate with Mohawk Students’ Association, Academic partners, and student service areas to provide an engaging and meaningful welcome experience for incoming students
- Engage in the development and implementation of Mohawk’s FYE strategy in support of the transition to college (beyond initial orientation activities)
- Coordinate, promote FYE programming including Future Ready Orientation and Re-Orientation courses in MyCanvas
- Contribute to the expansion of Future Ready Orientation
- Works with management to develop overall assessment strategy for student experience; implements strategy in collaboration with the Student Life team and College and community stakeholders
Administrative & Team Support
- Support Student Life team members in the coordination, design, and delivery of tri-campus departmental programs and services (including but not limited to: orientation & transition activities; Student Appreciation Week; Celebration of Learning; Campus to Community)
- Represent Student Life on committees and at campus/community events in-person/virtually as required
- Champions Student Life and Mohawk programs and events to build positive relationships with students and foster a strong student engagement and student leader culture college-wide
- Provide functional guidance to student staff and volunteers
- Maintain expert knowledge of the full range of college services, important dates, and campus processes
- Work with Marketing and Creative services to ensure assigned program webpages are maintained and updated (on the Student Life website and with the Future Ready Toolkit)
- Work with campus stakeholders to promote student Life activities, services and programs virtually and/or in-person
- Maintain, monitor and create/curate content for Student Life social media accounts
- Respect confidentiality of student information (verbal and written)
- Respond appropriately to students in distress
- Provide clerical support for department staff as required
- Monitors program budgets to ensure accurate spending and reporting
- Captures and archives program and event details (attendance, project plans, promotions, student feedback) to validate student participation on the Co-Curricular Record and to make recommendations to improve outcomes and contribute to cultivation of strong student engagement and student leader culture college-wide
Other duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- A minimum 3-year diploma/degree or equivalent education and experience in Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Leadership, Human Services
- A minimum of 3 years experience in an educational institution, program delivery environment or similar learner-centred educational environment
- Experience in student development, education, higher education, student affairs, volunteer management and/or event planning would be considered an asset
- Valid driver’s license
- Preference will be given to incumbents with facilitation experience in virtual and in-person program delivery environments
- Experience working independently and solving a wide range of problems
- Demonstrated effectiveness in designing, implementing, facilitating and assessing program content in a variety of virtual and in-person contexts
- Proven ability to work under pressure and coordinate competing priorities
- Strong organization, interpersonal and communication skills are essential
- Experience building partnerships with a range of internal and community stakeholders
- Experience developing virtual programs & initiatives and using virtual tools such as Canva, Padlet, Zoom, MS Teams, Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok etc.
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility
- The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities
