Job description

Calgary Jewish Federation is seeking a dynamic and passionate Director of Advocacy and Community Relations to lead and strengthen our efforts in fostering meaningful relationships within the Jewish community and with broader external stakeholders.

About Calgary Jewish Federation

Calgary Jewish Federation (CJF) is committed to building a strong, connected, and vibrant Jewish community in Calgary. As part of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), Jewish Federations of Canada-United Israel Appeal (JFC-UIA), and working with our national advocacy partner, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), this position will support and enhance CJF's mission through advocacy, community outreach, partnerships, and public relations at municipal, provincial, and federal levels.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the CEO, the ideal candidate is strategic, collaborative, and an effective communicator with strong community and government relationships. The role involves representing the organization to diverse constituencies including Jewish communal leaders, government officials, interfaith partners, and the broader public.

This is a full-time position with non-standard hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Community Engagement and Relations
    • Build relationships with local Jewish organizations, congregations, and community leaders.
    • Develop partnerships within and outside the Jewish community to advance CJF initiatives.
    • Maintain relationships with government representatives, community leaders, interfaith partners, and other organizations.
    • Lead community outreach to ensure CJF remains a trusted voice.
    • Provide support to community members on specific incidents.
    • Collaborate with CIJA on strategic initiatives.
  2. Public Relations and Advocacy
    • Promote CJF's mission through media engagement, press releases, and public statements.
    • Advocate for the community's needs at various government levels, aligning with policies of JFNA, JFC-UIA, and CIJA.
    • Manage external communications and disseminate information effectively.
    • Handle crisis communications as needed.
  3. Strategic Planning and Leadership
    • Develop and implement community relations strategies in collaboration with the Community Relations Committee.
    • Align community relations efforts with CJF's strategic plan in partnership with the CEO and Board.
    • Lead programs engaging diverse Jewish community segments.
  4. Event Planning and Implementation
    • Plan and execute events and campaigns to foster Jewish identity and engagement.
    • Organize forums, roundtables, and educational sessions.
    • Support fundraising opportunities related to community relations and advocacy.
    • Engage community members and partners in annual campaigns.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Jewish Studies, or related field; Master’s preferred.
Experience
  • At least seven years in community relations, public affairs, or related fields, preferably in non-profit or Jewish sectors.
  • Leadership experience with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven skills in advocacy, media relations, and strategic communications.
