Reporting to the Manager, Water Reclamation, this position is skilled in operation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and laboratory work of a complex nature related to all operational functions of wastewater treatment.

Duties Include:

  • Makes regular checks of the water reclamation plant and effluent pumping and storage works and process equipment to assure proper operation and makes adjustments as required.
  • Carries out preventative maintenance and repairs, modifies and inspects, lubricates, changes filters, changes oil, on all water reclamation plant and effluent pumping and storage equipment.
  • Replaces bearings, bushings, packing, shafts, sleeves, impellers, seals, propellers, screens, housings, fittings and other miscellaneous parts on sewage treatment and effluent pumping and storage equipment.
  • Required to be on standby when assigned, responds to call outs and takes corrective action as required.
  • Answers emergency malfunction calls or alarms and checks to locate trouble source, performs prescribed procedures to determine cause of problem and takes necessary steps to restore operations.
  • Assists skilled tradesmen, technicians and engineers in major repair or maintenance work.
  • Draws samples for testing by technician or others and conducts routine laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures.
  • Daily monitoring and analysis of machinery, historical computer data and process data.
  • Performs minor supervision of on-site staff periodically.
  • Assists in the training of junior operators.
  • Tabulates and compiles data relating to the water reclamation plant and pumping system operation and maintenance.
  • Exercises considerable independence of judgement in daily routine. Non-routine issues are forwarded to a supervisor for response.
  • Enters and extracts data from a computerized maintenance program.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Cleans equipment, pipes, valves, chambers, rails, heaters, traps, and other equipment on a regular basis or as required.
  • Performs janitorial tasks including painting and changing light bulbs and heating and cooling system maintenance in and around the treatment plant and effluent pumping system.
  • Performs ground maintenance duties such as cutting of lawns, trimming shrubs, watering, weeding, snow removal from walks and drives and general upkeep.
  • All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Environmental Operator Certification Program Certificate - Level II W.W.T.
  • Minimum 4 years experience in water reclamation plant operation and maintenance.
  • WHMIS
  • BC EOCP Chlorine Handlers Certificate or Chlorination Course through WET (Water Engineering Technology program) or equivalent.
  • Level I First Aid
  • Valid B.C. Driver's Licence, Class 5
  • A combination of related education and experience may be considered.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance procedures relating to the water reclamation plant, effluent pumping and storage systems and all materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the above.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform standard laboratory tests and analysis procedures.
  • Good working knowledge of the principles, methods, equipment, and materials used in the water reclamation plant and pumping system operation.
  • Good working knowledge of the safe handling procedures of sodium hypochlorite and other chemicals used in wastewater treatment and pumping system operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • A mechanical aptitude and ability.
  • A working knowledge of pumps, motors, hydraulics, compressors, gas systems, UV Disinfection and sand filtration and other related equipment.
  • Proficient use of computer-related software and general office equipment.
  • Demonstrated abilities using small power tools and other related equipment.
  • Ability to make accurate notes, sketches and observation reports.
  • Knowledge of control valves and pilot systems relative to their operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, alarms and direct control.
  • Thorough knowledge of WorkSafe BC Regulations and City of Vernon safety policies relating to the work.
  • Self-starter and able to pre-plan and carry out tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with contractors and the general public.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to undertake training including progress toward Level III certification.
  • Able to pass a respirator fit test consistent with SCBA manufacturer specifications.


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Two-year Water Quality Program supplemented by two years experience.
  • Four years of working in a Municipal Wastewater Treatment System.
  • Environmental Operator Certificate Program – Class III Wastewater Treatment Distribution Operator Certificate.
