Position Title : Accommodation Advisor (5 positions)

Status : FT Support

Faculty / Department : SSE, Student Wellness and Equitable Learning

Campus / Location : This is a fully on-site position. Primary location is North Campus (3) or Lakeshore Campus (2) with occasional travel to the alternate campus as well as Carrier Drive and Humber Downtown locations.

Salary : Payband : K Salary Range : $46.08 - $53.43

Starting Salary : $46.08. Progression through the payband is in accordance with the increments in the payband as outlined in the Full-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement based on actual service in the payband.

About the Accommodation Advisor Role :

The Accessible Learning Services department is guided by the social model of disability, which focuses on removing physical, social, and attitudinal barriers in the learning environment. It prioritizes learner-centered approaches and promotes inclusive, collaborative spaces where all students, especially those with disabilities, are empowered to participate fully.

The department actively works to reduce barriers, ensure clear communication, and facilitate equitable access to services. Through this model, the department fosters a proactive and empowering relationship with students, advocating for an inclusive educational experience.

The Accommodation Advisor will play a pivotal role in supporting learners with disabilities by guiding them through the process of determining and implementing appropriate academic accommodations. This role is rooted in the social model of disability, emphasizing learner-driven processes, empowerment, and the removal of barriers to ensure an inclusive and equitable educational environment. The Accommodation Advisor will work closely with learners to assess their individual needs, facilitate self-advocacy, and collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure accommodations are both appropriate and effective.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Promote self-advocacy, independence, and self-determination among learners by providing guidance and resources throughout their academic journey.
  • Conduct intake interviews to explore the impact of disabilities on learners' academic experiences and identify support services within and outside the institution.
  • Develop and implement individualized accommodation plans through an interactive process with the learner, considering self-reporting, assessment documentation, and program demands.
  • Liaise with faculty and staff to ensure accommodations align with course requirements and uphold academic integrity while meeting learning outcomes.
  • Facilitate ongoing reviews of accommodation plans to address changing needs or concerns.

Initiate case conferences with colleagues, faculty, and students to advise on issues surrounding accommodations or arising needs of the learner. Common reasons include :

  • Accommodations for field / clinical placements
  • Conflict management between learner and faculty
  • Classroom behavior issues
  • Management of medical concerns in classroom
  • Planning with faculty around reduced course load
  • Support for departmental programming and groups

Additional responsibilities :

  • Coordinate and facilitate information sessions for learners, parents / guardians, and colleagues on accessing services for learners with disabilities.
  • Act as liaison between learners, faculty, and external partners to promote understanding and cooperation in implementing accommodations.
  • Participate in developing initiatives to meet the evolving needs of a diverse learner population.

  • Designing and delivering programs that prioritize student learning and success.
  • Engaging with campus community members to promote inclusivity and collaboration.
  • Collecting and analyzing data to inform decision-making and improve services.
  • Using evidence-based practices to guide strategies and initiatives.
  • Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion across campus.
  • Collaborating across departments to create a holistic student experience.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development.
  • Communicating outcomes and impact of initiatives to stakeholders.
  • Encouraging innovation to enhance student educational experiences.
  • Upholding ethical standards and responsible resource management.

Education

Master’s degree in Counseling, Disability Studies, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Education, or a related field is required.

Experience / Skills

Minimum of three years full-time experience working with adults with disabilities in a community organization, educational institution, or healthcare setting; as well as :

  • Experience in assessing disability needs and recommending accommodations to reduce barriers in education.
  • Experience interpreting assessment reports to develop effective accommodation plans.
  • Understanding of the social model of disability and its application in post-secondary education.
  • Strong skills in active listening, empathy, and inclusive communication.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with databases, LMS, and adaptive technology.
  • Ability to analyze assessment data to inform practice.
