Job description

Job Summary:

The Finance Manager will join the Russell Labs Administrative Service Center ("The Hub") team, supporting the academic departments of Entomology, Forest and Wildlife Ecology, and Plant Pathology in their research, instructional, and outreach missions. This position collaborates with the Russell Labs Department Administrator to lead financial operations for these departments.

The Russell Labs Hub comprises professionals providing department-level support in administration, facilities maintenance, financial and grants services, human resources and payroll, IT, and student services. We seek a motivated colleague capable of leading various financial functions during our transition to new business processes with WorkDay software.

A highly qualified candidate will have a strong understanding of the financial and business environment at UW-Madison, with skills as a systems thinker, able to identify improvement areas and collaborate effectively to implement change.

Responsibilities:
  1. 20% - Lead financial and accounting operations across multiple areas; oversee data management, budget prep, and financial reporting.
  2. 20% - Supervise staff, including hiring, managing performance, and staff development.
  3. 15% - Verify, audit, and authorize financial charges and payments.
  4. 10% - Develop and disseminate fiscal policies, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  5. 5% - Maintain and monitor automated financial information systems.
  6. 5% - Analyze financial data and advise unit leadership.
  7. 5% - Serve as a financial operations subject matter expert, recommending process improvements.
  8. 5% - Collaborate with Department Administrator and Chairs on budgeting and financial decisions.
  9. 15% - Foster teamwork and communication between grants, HR, and finance teams within the Hub.

Education:

Preferred: Bachelor's in finance, business, administration, or related field.

Qualifications:

Required: At least three years' experience in financial operations; experience with financial/grant systems (e.g., Workday, PeopleSoft); knowledge of financial policies; strong organizational skills; supervisory experience (2+ years).

Preferred: Knowledge of UW, state, federal regulations; familiarity with UW financial systems; research administration experience.

Full-time, may include some remote work and onsite presence.

Salary:
