Job description

TheCape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

QUALIFICATIONS and COMPETENCIES
  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate
  • A minimum of five (5) years recent (in the past 7) successful classroom teaching experience in literacy instruction at grades 9-12.
  • Leadership experience with literacy initiatives at the classroom, school, Region, and/or provincial level(s). Please provide examples.
  • Excellent leadership, team-building, communication (written, oral, and electronic), and interpersonal skills. Please provide examples.
  • Experience and willingness to work closely with Student Services and other regional teams.

Experience with Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is preferred.

High School Literacy Coach (9-12)
Overall Scope

The Literacy Coach will be responsible for working with classroom teachers and students in small groups. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of the Nova Scotia curriculum and high-level literacy practices associated with strong classroom practice. Modeling these practices is an essential skill for this position. The candidate is expected to have strong communication skills. As we move forward with 21st-century learning, this position will be built around using student evidence to inform classroom planning. Experience scoring Provincial Assessments would be an asset.

Successful coaching and/or mentoring require deep understanding, knowledge, and skills in key areas including:

  • The current English Language Arts curriculum
  • Authentic, balanced assessment strategies
  • Effective instructional strategies based on current research
  • Knowledge of how students learn to read and write across all subjects
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Strategies for developing positive relationships built on trust and collaboration
  • Strategies for supporting teachers to become self-monitoring practitioners and self-extending learners
  • Time management strategies
  • Strategies to interpret and respond to changing contexts
  • Participation in professional learning opportunities
  • Analyzing problems and recommending improvements in practice and achievement
  • A positive perspective on change and supporting others through it
  • Strategies for monitoring, assessing, and reporting on coaching progress
  • Use of technology and digital learning environments
  • Use of data to improve instruction and student achievement
  • Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Literacy

Salary is as per NSTU Provincial Collective Agreement.
