About the position:
- The Life Skills Worker is part of a team that is responsible for the delivery of client focused, culturally relevant and trauma informed support services and programs that address resident needs in an appropriate and effective manner.
- The Life Skills Worker ensures the continuity of the day, and as required evening programming and will ensure and is responsible for providing a home like, comfortable and normative environment in the residential setting.
- Candidate must be willing to work weekends, evenings and to be on-call on a rotation basis.
- Candidate must have experience and proven ability in planning, preparing and leading dynamic interactive group sessions using various mediums and delivery methods.
- All candidates will be asked to demonstrate this skill at the interview by presenting a written workshop plan and facilitating a portion of the plan with a ten-minute activity with panel. The detailed workshop plan will state objectives and how the ten-minute presentation fits within the plan; the workshop plan will also note facilitation methodology for each section (i.e. Flip chart, power point, group or individual exercise, brainstorming, etc.) and estimates of length for each section. A list of materials and copies of power points and any handouts are to be included.
- We are looking for a candidate with addictions services experience, an in depth understanding of the impact of trauma on First Nations and its complexity, and a willingness to work as a team member within a multi-disciplinary team.
- RLTC is an alcohol and drug free environment – Service providers in the substance misuse field must maintain a reasonable standard of professional practice and will act as a role model.
Education, Training and Experience:
- A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Diploma in a related field in Health, or Social Work and/or Professional Certification from Life Skills training program and commensurate combination of two years’ work experience in recovery home, treatment center or Human Service Worker training.
- Class 4 Motor Vehicle License.
- Basic First Aid and C.P.R. Certification.
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated background and knowledge of First Nations peoples’ customs, culture, trauma issues, and cultural oppression.
- Knowledge of relevant referral options and services.
- Must have strong written and communication skills. Computer skills in word and excel are essential.
- Previous experience working in a First Nations recovery home, treatment center or Human Service Worker environment and life skills worker experience.
- Problem solving/critical thinking skills, excellent interpersonal skills and conflict resolution skills.
- Good judgment and client-centered decision-making skills such as how to handle resident dissatisfaction, or disruptive interactions between residents and resolving other resident discord and able to set appropriate boundaries or consequences.
