Our growing company is searching for top talent to join our team in the role of Animal Breeder located in and around the communities of Southern Manitoba, including but not limited to, La Broquerie, Morris, St. Malo, Vita, Zhoda and other surrounding areas. These positions report to the Barn Manager.

Your days will include :

  • Assist in the development of improved practices in feeding, housing, sanitation, parasite and disease control for the animals, and improvement of animal care during the breeding process
  • Study and examine the animals in heat and select pigs to be bred
  • Crossbreed pigs to obtain desirable characteristics
  • Perform heat checks on the animals to determine which may be bred
  • Conduct artificial insemination using appropriate veterinary techniques
  • Evaluate breeding practices and develop breeding schedules
  • Farrowing duties consisting of maintaining detailed records of all required information for pig’s growth, following inducing procedures, clean up after births, stillborns & mummies and attend farrowing sows
  • Observe the sows and litters during farrowing and weaning and provide treatment as needed to the animals
  • Processing of piglets : cut tails, tattoo ears, vaccinate, castrate males
  • Use veterinary and animal science knowledge to treat animals during the breeding and farrowing processes as necessary.
  • Monitor the introduction of new feed during the weaning process and ensure animals receive appropriate nutrition.
  • Evaluate the environmental conditions and identify issues that may affect sow and piglet health, recommend changes in environment, especially during farrowing period for animal welfare and safety
  • Evaluate the weaning process to reduce the stress on the animals including monitoring introduction of new feed during the weaning process and implementing changes to environment and feed to reduce stress during weaning process
  • Ensure company practices and biosecurity standards are being met and followed throughout the animal breeding process.
  • Identify non-thriving pigs, determine, and administer treatment of sick / injured animals including monitoring medication and withdrawal period applicable.
  • Stay up to date on innovations in the industry and apply genetic and scientific knowledge to recommend methods of improving the breeding program to increase animal productivity and
  • Daily animal health checks – monitor health, treat animals (working with the Animal Health team), if non-responsive euthanizing when required (for piglets)

To succeed in this role, you must possess :

  • Degree in Animal Science, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Medicine, Zootechnics, or related degree
