Position Overview

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position offers nursing students an opportunity to consolidate their knowledge and skills acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the practice of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN). The UNE is an unregulated member of the healthcare team providing patient-centered care under the supervision of an RN or RPN.

The scope of activities and supervision level are determined by legislation, standards of supervision, employer policies, educational background, practice setting, patient complexity, risk level, and the UNE’s competency. The RN or RPN at the point of care is responsible for assigning patient care tasks to the UNE.

The UNE is accountable for delivering safe nursing care aligned with their education and competency, and must seek guidance when needed. The UNE is not employed in a practice setting during their clinical placement as a student.

*Patient refers to an adult or child receiving health care services from a Regional Health Authority and/or Shared Health, including residents, clients, and outpatients.

  • Current enrollment in an approved nursing education program leading to initial RN or RPN licensure.
  • Successful completion of third-year coursework or enrollment in third year with at least 450 clinical hours in an approved program.
  • Additional clinical placement in medical/surgical or mental health settings may be required for specific patient care areas.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Registered student status according to policies of the educational institution.
