Job Responsibilities
  • Provide explicit, systematic instruction, including intensive phonics and phonemic awareness, to students from primary through grade two identified as needing additional support with foundational reading skills.
  • Use a structured literacy approach and recommended resources within the MTSS framework.
  • Administer literacy screeners/assessments on P-2 students.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and administrators to identify students requiring intervention and support school-based teams.
  • Implement strategies, activities, and techniques tailored to each student’s prior knowledge, skills, and learning needs.
  • Support literacy development in classrooms, ensuring transfer of skills and strategies based on best practices.
  • Use assessment data to inform next steps.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Contribute as a professional learner within a regional team.
  • Monitor, assess, and report on the impact of intervention initiatives.
  • Maintain and submit required records.
  • Promote equity and the belief that all students can learn.
Qualifications
  • Valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate.
  • Minimum five years of recent successful elementary literacy teaching experience.
  • Leadership in literacy initiatives at various levels.
  • Deep knowledge of elementary literacy curriculum, including the Six Pillars of Effective Reading Instruction and Phonics (P-2).
  • Experience working with Collaborative Learning Teams and using student data for instructional planning.
  • Master’s Degree/Certificate/Diploma in Literacy or equivalent experience; additional degrees in Leadership, Assessment, Curriculum, or Inclusive Education are assets.
  • Bilingual skills supporting French Second Language learners are assets.
