Job description

This role is responsible for executing projects within Kahnawà : ke and Tioweró : ton that enhance community understanding, protection, and restoration of the natural environment, with a focus on invasive species monitoring and management.

  • Identify community needs related to environmental projects, including surface water, groundwater, habitats, wildlife, and contaminated sites.
  • Develop, coordinate, and ensure progress of environmental projects and programs.
  • Prepare funding proposals, terms of reference, and requests for proposals; participate in consultant selection.
  • Collaborate with MCK administrative units for contractual and budget matters.
  • Manage project documentation, budgets, and schedules.
  • Engage in project activities such as fieldwork, presentations, and communications.
  • Serve as liaison among project staff, community members, stakeholders, and media.
  • Work with the Environmental Education Liaison to promote projects and gather community input via media, open houses, and surveys.

Invasive Species Management :

  • Enhance strategies for invasive species control, building on existing recommendations like the Big Fence project.
  • Develop and implement long-term invasive species management strategies.
  • Conduct surveys, develop management plans, lead stakeholder engagement, secure funding, and oversee control activities.
  • Create and maintain a database of invasive species in the community.
  • Implement annual communication plans to educate the community about invasive species threats and management efforts.
  • Collaborate with GIS specialists to update invasive species data.
  • Participate in field monitoring and remediation activities.
  • Coordinate with regional entities and experts to stay informed about best practices and scientific developments.

Environmental Expertise and Policy Support :

  • Review and compile environmental information for proposed projects and policies.
  • Assist in preparing environmental positions and documentation such as reports and briefing notes.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of local policies reflecting current scientific knowledge.
  • Provide environmental expertise to community members, staff, and leadership on various issues.
