Job description

Software International (SI) supplies technical talent to Fortune 100/500/1000 companies in Canada. We currently have a long-term, renewable contract as a Systems Team Lead with our IT consulting client that primarily supports North American clients on various website and backend infrastructure services.

Location: Remote (anywhere in Canada/USA/South America, but must be able to work on EST with the Canadian team)

Required Start Date: ASAP

Required End Date: 12 months + renewable every year

Type: Contract

Total Hours Approved Per Role: 40h/week

Rate: $42/hr C2C (approx. $84,000 - $86,000/year)

Client Location: US/Canada

Summary:

Reporting directly to the CTO and managing the Systems department. This is a leadership role responsible for the overall technical management, operations, ongoing maintenance, and support of our large-scale production websites and networks.

Role Responsibilities:

  1. Chief responsibility over systems and networks.
  2. Maintain vendor relationships, as required, for technical infrastructure of office and website systems.
  3. Work directly with the Development Team Leads and Project Management in managing projects for the website and provide final sign-off/approval for release to production.
  4. Participate in planning and project discussions for various websites with Senior Management.
  5. Analyze and assess areas of risk to systems and recommend/implement changes as appropriate to the business.
  6. Continuously assess network and systems security, ensuring a high level of systems data security is maintained overall. Report concerns directly to the CTO.
  7. Perform systems and network architectural design for the network, including capacity planning, hardware, infrastructure, software integration, OS and software performance tuning.
  8. Act as the single point of escalation for production issues, interfacing with required resources to ensure timely resolution.
  9. Effectively manage risk, including monitoring, system redundancy, and backups based on business requirements and acceptable risk.
  10. Supervise, coach, motivate, and inspire team members to maintain healthy group dynamics while adhering to company directives and policies.
  11. Provide technical assistance and consultation as required to all areas of the company, including Project Management, Sales, Quality Assurance, Accounting, Customer Service, Development, and Systems departments.
  12. Perform special tasks and projects company-wide, as assigned by the CTO.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Daily technical supervision of Systems Administration staff of about 7 resources.
  2. Provide mentoring and technical assistance to Systems Administration staff on a day-to-day basis, as required.
  3. Lead by example, demonstrating behavior consistent with verbal directives.
  4. Provide feedback for performance reviews for Technical and Development staff and the various websites.
  5. Facilitate problem-solving and collaboration, ensuring discussions lead toward closure, and intervene when necessary to aid the team in resolving issues.
  6. Be part of the on-call rotation (12pm-8pm EST, 1-week duration every 4 weeks).
  7. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  1. 5+ years of experience with LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).
  2. Minimum of 2+ years of management/leadership experience in a technology-oriented organization required.
  3. Must be well-versed in supporting web servers.
  4. Strong background with storage SAN (NFS and iSCSI).
  5. Well-versed with ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Kibana, Beats, and Logstash).
  6. Experience adding/removing nodes, expanding clusters, rebuilding clusters, and using InfluxDB.
  7. Knowledge of TCP/IP BGP and OSPF.
  8. Hands-on experience working with Linux in a Systems Administrative role.
  9. Hands-on experience working with Advanced Network Administrative role including routing, switching, and security.
  10. Exceptional problem determination and creative problem-solving skills.
  11. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  12. Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle.
  13. Strong documentation and organizational practices.
  14. Extensive experience with:
    1. MySQL, maintenance and troubleshooting.
    2. LAN/WAN/VPN setup and troubleshooting.
    3. Linux-based and other firewall technology.
    4. Cloud technologies (OpenStack, oVirt, RHEV or similar).
    5. Baremetal hardware, SAN, Switching, and Load-balancing.
    6. Backup technologies.
    7. Systems security.
    8. Automation systems (Ansible, Puppet or equivalent).
    9. Expertise with multiple Web technologies.
