Job description

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

Person who works directly with service users to ensure their education and rehabilitation in an institutional or external setting, in accordance with the intervention programs established in collaboration with the existing team of professionals, to foster the rehabilitation of individuals and/or their reintegration into society. She/he applies education techniques involving activities of daily living in organizing, coordinating, and conducting programmed activities aimed at helping these individuals learn and acquire appropriate attitudes and behaviors. She/he observes and analyzes the behavior of the service users, participates in assessing their needs and abilities, and records their progress by writing reports. She/he is responsible for programming her/his own activities.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

In accordance with the policy and procedures of the CBHSSJB and within the framework of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Youth Protection Act, S-5, and CMC mandate, the incumbent:

  • Designs, animates, and evaluates therapeutic activities, teachings, and cultural activities for youth;
  • Ensures the learning and acquisition of Cree beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviors;
  • Contributes to and is directly responsible for maintaining appropriate hygiene and safety standards as dictated in policies and procedures, including health and safety prevention measures and reporting building maintenance issues;
  • Provides supervision of youth at all times;
  • Communicates and partners with youth, families, social services, schools, and other relevant entities;
  • Ensures administrative orientation and clinical training for Youth Healing Social Aide;
  • Participates in team meetings;
  • Organizes and participates in group home outings within and outside the community;
  • Records and reports as needed, including daily lodging, bi-weekly youth progress, help path plans, court reports, and parental letters;
  • Uses formal and informal counseling techniques;
  • Collaborates with colleagues, families, and the community to support youth well-being and development;
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times and for all files.
EDUCATION

Must have a college diploma (DEC) in social work techniques or a relevant discipline recognized by the ministry; or a certificate of college studies in social work or social assistance techniques; or certifications in Native Childcare Services or Special Needs Education for Aboriginal and Inuit children. In absence of these, secondary 5 diploma from a recognized school may be considered.

EXPERIENCE

At least 3 years of experience in Youth Healing; successful completion of Boscoville Training or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of child care and group care; understanding of families and human relations;
  • Skills in social services, counseling, and monitoring; sensitivity to behavioral issues;
  • Knowledge of Cree culture, language, and social/health issues in Eeyou Istchee;
  • Understanding of healing practices and paradigms of Eenou/Eeyou Pimaatsiiun;
  • Proficiency in office applications; good record in human services;
  • Ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team; excellent interpersonal, communication, and report-writing skills;
  • Autonomous, flexible, discreet, empathetic; emotionally mature, resourceful, vigilant;
  • Analytical, good judgment, critical thinking, organizational skills, decision-making;
  • Ability to read and write reports (mandatory skills exam).
LANGUAGE
  • Fluent in Cree and English; fluency in French is an asset.
OTHER
  • Excellent driving record;
  • Willingness to travel within and outside Eeyou Istchee;
  • Availability to work outside regular hours occasionally;
  • Work schedule: Wednesday to Wednesday, 10 hours/day for 7 days, and 7.5 hours on the 8th day. Shifts from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
