The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is seeking a Creative and committed Educational Assistant for a 100% term position, 35 hours per week. Under the Principal's direction, you will support students with exceptional needs, including Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Autism Spectrum Disorder, across various school activities and programs.

The successful candidate will hold a college diploma in Developmental Services Worker or related field, with 1–2 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • Developmental Services Worker diploma or Child and Youth Care/Worker diploma or equivalent is required.
  • First Aid certification/CPR Level C is an asset.
  • Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), TCI, or Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training preferred.
  • Please include copies of relevant diploma(s)/certificates.

Responsibilities

  • Support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and developmental disabilities within the school.
  • Participate in pool programs, academic support, and implementation of special programs.
  • Support deaf/hard of hearing or visually impaired students; assist with physiotherapy exercises and stretches.
  • Modify programs and support learning for students with learning disabilities and speech/language issues.
  • Assignments may include yard duties, lifting, and pool duties.

Job description

Educational Assistant - 100 % Term, 35 hours/week

Under the direction of the Principal, the Educational Assistant is an integral member of the school team and is responsible for the provision of support to students with exceptional needs within the school. The position involves dealing with confidential information and requires ongoing flexibility and variability. Responsibilities are varied, in collaboration with teaching and other professional staff, and include: supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and students with developmental disabilities; participation in pool programs, academic support, implementing special programs, support to deaf/hard of hearing or visually impaired students, physiotherapy exercises and stretches.

Educational Assistants may be required to modify programs and support learning for students with learning disabilities, and speech/language issues. Assignments may also include outside yard duties, lifting, toileting, and/or pool duties. Knowledge of Ontario Curriculum and educational communication software such as Dragon and Kurzweil are assets.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will possess a community college diploma in Developmental Services Worker, Child and Youth Care/Worker, or equivalent, and a minimum of 1-2 years of related experience with school aged special needs children. Equivalent programs must be assessed by Employee Services staff. Valid First Aid certification/CPR Level C is an asset. The successful candidate will have also completed Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, TCI, and/or Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training. Assignment: Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH)
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Must have a high level of fluency in ASL
  • Must be able to work within and adapt to a high paced ASL language situation
  • Must be able to understand academic messages/lessons given in English followed by relaying this message accurately in ASL to a Deaf student
  • Support student enrolled in Academic level courses
  • Must comprehend the learning needs of a Deaf student and the multi-faceted role of working with staff and students
  • First Aid/CPR
  • 1-2 years of related experience with special needs children providing support with Sign Language
  • Please include copies of degree(s) and/or certificates that are applicable to the qualifications
Who can apply

In accordance with the Student Support Personnel's Collective Agreement, O.S.S.T.F. District 25, and further to Articles 23.04 and 23:07 qualified regular part-time employees are eligible to increase their status and apply to part-time term vacancies if it does not interfere with their regular assignment, subject to Article 13:03; (i.e. 30 minutes between assignments or travel time, whichever is greater, without impact on current part-time hours of work). Regular full-time employees are not eligible to apply for term vacancies

NOTE

As per the SSP Collective Agreement, EAs who have already accepted terms for the 2026/2027 school year that end June 25, 2027 are not eligible to apply unless to increase status.

Salary

$29.42 - $32.82 per hour
