Job Description Summary

Develop and implement horticultural education programs for UBC Botanical Garden. Serve as a horticulture liaison within the community. Deliver technical expertise and instruction for the Horticulture Training Program. Develop new community programs for local horticulturists and organizations.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Director & Director. Collaborates with staff, students, and volunteers.

Work Performed
  1. Deliver the Horticulture Training Program.
  2. Assess, develop, and implement non-credit horticulture courses for students, the public, schools, and seniors.
  3. Design and manage Horticulture Training Program projects within the garden.
  4. Develop and maintain community outreach programs to increase awareness and involvement.
  5. Develop summer public education courses, including budgeting, coordinating guest lecturers, and materials.
  6. Assess educational materials for lectures, tours, demonstrations, and events.
  7. Act as a media spokesperson and extension representative.
  8. Engage with potential students through recruitment, orientations, and open houses.
  9. Organize volunteer and community education initiatives with campus organizations.
  10. Plan and coordinate displays for public and private events.
  11. Collaborate with garden staff to utilize grounds for training.
  12. Liaise with local garden clubs and societies.
  13. Represent UBC Botanical Garden at local and international speaking engagements.
Consequence of Error / Judgement

Requires significant horticultural and educational expertise. Poor performance could harm the Garden's reputation and support, affecting its viability.

Supervision Received

Reports to the Associate Director & Director. Work is reviewed for effectiveness and goal achievement.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, preferably in Horticulture or related fields. Minimum of four years of experience or equivalent. Experience in horticulture extension and public education. Strong horticultural and botanical knowledge. Teaching and research experience. Understanding of the role of a botanical garden. Experience in a unionized environment. Effective communication, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Computer proficiency (MS Office, internet, email). Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Tact and discretion in multicultural interactions.
