Overall Accountability

The Education Assistant, Severe Behaviour is a vital member of the student’s learning team, working in the classroom to assist students with diverse learning needs. This includes students with academic, social, emotional, communication (mild to severe), medical, and physical needs. The Education Assistant supports teachers and therapeutic specialists in providing specialized programming for students with:

  • Severe social, emotional, and/or behavioural disabilities.

The Education Assistant reports to the Principal or designate and takes direction from the teacher as part of a multi-disciplinary team within Calgary Catholic Schools.

Specific Accountabilities
  1. Assist in providing programming support and activities of daily living, such as student self-care (dressing, toileting/diapering, etc.).
  2. Support students individually and in small groups to achieve curriculum goals.
  3. Perform physically demanding tasks to meet the needs of students with complex physical and medical needs, including hand-over-hand instruction, lifting, transferring, personal hygiene, toileting/diapering, feeding, range of motion, walking, stretching, and physical restraint to manage inappropriate behaviour.
  4. Disinfect and perform general housekeeping duties.
  5. Participate in ongoing professional development related to the learning profiles of students.
  6. Provide one-on-one support for students, promoting a safe, calm, and positive learning environment. Assist with documenting observations and maintaining records as per Alberta Education mandates.
  7. Attend individual student case consultations within assigned hours.
  8. Prepare materials supporting students with diverse learning needs.
  9. Supervise students during out-of-class times such as recess, transitions, lunch, and transportation.
  10. Assist in supervising field trips.
  11. Help manage inappropriate behaviour, including the implementation of NVCI physical restraint techniques (if certified).
  12. Support students during school celebrations, liturgical events, services, and Mass attendance.
  13. Demonstrate initiative and independence in managing class time.
Qualifications
  • Child and Youth Care Worker Diploma, or a related field, or
  • Education Assistant Certificate with training in behaviour disabilities, or
  • High school diploma with three years’ experience working with behaviourally challenged students.

Experience working with students with diverse learning needs or severe behavioral challenges, such as trauma or stress-related disorders, externalized behaviours, etc., is preferred.

  • Completion of training in non-violent crisis intervention may be required depending on the assignment.
  • Certifications in CPR and First Aid are desirable.
  • Ability to address social, emotional, and mental health challenges of active and demanding children.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Physical ability to meet all demands of the position (see link).
