CERTIFIED EDUCATION ASSISTANT - REPLACEMENT STEP #1
Position Description

There is a position available for a Certified Education Assistant Replacement Step #1 at C.M. Finch Elementary School. Applications must be completed online and will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.

Reporting to the site Administrative Officer(s), this position is responsible for working under the direction of the classroom teacher and various District personnel in providing care for students (training provided by appropriate medical personnel when required). Please note this position will end with the return of the incumbent.

This position requires an individual to work as part of a collaborative team that provides assistance to teachers in the delivery and implementation of educational programs and services. The education programs facilitate the integration, growth, learning, safety, and comfort of students with a variety of educational, emotional, and behavioural needs. The successful candidate will work with students with special needs, youth with learning disabilities, those on modified and alternate programs (primarily in classroom settings), as well as provide, on occasion, pull-out support for individuals or small groups.

Hours of Work

5.5 hours per day, five days per week

Duties to Commence

As soon as possible after closing until the return of the incumbent

Starting Salary

$26.24 - $31.43, based on certification

Responsibilities
  • Provide instructional support to students to implement educational programs as determined by the teacher/resource team/administrator and give feedback on daily work.
  • Construct or locate instructional materials, games, displays, and learning centers.
  • Operate computers, audiovisual equipment, and adaptive technology.
  • Supervise students during educational activities, observe and record academic and behavioral assessment data to assist teachers.
  • Copy, transcribe, type, file, and maintain records.
  • Implement behavior management programs as determined by the teacher/resource team.
  • Provide personal/health care and physical safety assistance to students.
  • Attend team/parent professional development meetings as required.
  • Assist in implementing programs requiring intensive behavior interventions.
  • Supervise students in various settings including classroom, gym, playground, bus loading/unloading, and community trips.
  • Foster student independence and peer interactions.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Attend specific workshops as directed by the Administrative Officer(s).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within your knowledge and skills.
Qualifications and Attributes
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Willing to maintain current CPI status
  • Level 1 First Aid Certificate may be required
  • Education Assistant Certificate with training in areas such as:
    • Pervasive developmental disorders, ASD, FASD, behavioral needs
    • Developmental and sensory needs
    • Personal care skills
    • Technology-assisted programs
    • Behavior support and crisis management
    • Learning challenges
    • Formal POPARD training or experience
  • Ability to remain calm in difficult situations
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with students
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Physical ability to keep up with active children
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize
  • WHMIS and online safety training to be completed within probationary period
  • Good interpersonal skills and team orientation
  • Ability to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search
