Specific responsibilities entail the following:
- Assist the student to complete assignments and different tasks, which fulfill their social, physical, academic, and life skills objectives as outlined in their IEP and assigned by the Teacher.
- Maintain any documentation (behavior logs, anecdotal notes, etc.) on the student.
- Assist other students within the classroom and become familiar with the students' learning needs as required.
- Supervise the student as required.
- Facilitate student integration skills.
- Review and reinforce learning activities using lesson plans and learning strategies developed by the teacher/team to help the student master concepts and skills.
- Assist in the collection of data for the purpose of evaluating student progress.
- Assist in meeting individual behavioral objectives of the student.
- Help in maintaining and organizing classroom and teaching material.
- Implement plans as specified by the Teacher.
- Act as a resource to any student.
- Carry out the Teacher’s plans for the students – including academic and non-academic activities.
- Maintain accurate student records and confidentiality.
- Assist students with school assignments under the direction of the teacher.
- Supervise students’ safety in new environments, field trips, etc.
- Be familiar and understand medical concerns that are relevant to the children you work with.
- Be familiar with emergency protocol and response (Earthquake, fire, etc.).
- Monitor and record the progress of students with regards to the objectives outlined in the IEP.
- First Aid and Supervision duties as scheduled.
Adaptability:
- Participates in all tasks that are associated with the Special Needs Program.
- Adheres to the code of conduct and ethical standards as set out by Highroad Academy.
- Notifies the administrator in a timely manner of absences so that a TOC/sub can be obtained.
- Maintains and updates documentation.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding students and staff issues.
- Maintains a professional attitude, boundaries, and work environment.
- Exhibits flexibility with the natural ebbs and flows that are required within this department (changes in schedule; supporting other students when required; etc.).
Interpersonal Relations:
- Maintain constant and open communication with Classroom Teacher & Department Head.
- Bring potential problems and concerns to the attention of the Department Head.
- Develop positive relationships with students, Teachers, and other team members.
- Display professional boundaries in all situations and relationships in regards to students, parents, and staff relationships.
- Follow policies and protocols.
Initiative:
- Develop a Personal Growth Plan.
- Self-initiate for needs of the student and classroom.
- Help to organize activities that are necessary for the completion of tasks.
- Act as a resource for any student.
- Promote a positive image of Special Needs Students within the school and community.
- Engage in the greater Highroad community.
