Job summary

Delta School District in Delta, BC is hiring an Itinerant - Education Assistant for Indigenous Education Services. The role supports students with special needs across K–12, collaborating with teachers, families and community partners to implement IEPs and safety plans, and to provide direct student support.

The position is itinerant and temporary, 30 hours per week for 10 months, starting September 8, 2026.

SUMMARY:

The Child and Youth Care Worker (CYCW) supports the emotional, social, and behavioural development of children and youth in the K–12 education system. Working collaboratively with school staff, families, and community agencies, the CYCW provides direct support to students experiencing personal, social, or behavioral challenges. The goal is to foster safe, inclusive, and supportive school environments that promote student well-being and academic success.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful completion of a secondary school graduation program or equivalent.

Completion of a recognized post-secondary education assistant program, including or supplemented by training related to specific diagnosis such as ASD, diabetes, chronic health impairment, conflict resolution, and non-violent crisis intervention.

One year recent, related experience specific to the needs of students with cognitive, behavioural, emotional, communication, sensory and/or physical, health challenges.

Proven ability to implement positive behaviour intervention techniques, as well as flexibility in response to student behaviours (e.g., adjusting and adapting strategies).

Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.

Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of the classroom/specialized teacher.

Ability to operate a variety of office and school equipment including equipment specific to the needs of the student(s).

Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

Ability to work collaboratively and use judgement when providing information.

Ability to use patience, tolerance, and understanding in developing and maintaining a rapport with students, and in resolving problems or conflicts that may arise.

Remains current with changing technology, and diagnosis‑specific approaches and equipment.

Knowledge of basic first aid.

Current CPI and Non Violent Crisis Intervention.

Knowledge of WorkSafe BC and WHMIS procedures and regulations. Safe work practices.

Some positions may require the knowledge of a language other than English. Some positions may require Braille, Sign Language or deaf/blind-specific instructional communication strategies. Some positions may require a valid BC driver's license.

DUTIES:

Assists the teacher(s) in planning and implementing the Individual Educational Programs of students with special needs by adapting, modifying and reinforcing instructional strategies and curriculum.

Assists the teacher, inclusive team teachers, counselors and/or case managers, in creating and implementing educational plans such as IEPs, AIPs, Safety Plans, and Positive Behaviour Support Plans, including ABA-based educational plans for student’s success.

Assist students from kindergarten to Grade 12 who are experiencing personal, social, emotional, behavioural, mental health and academic challenges by providing student-specific goals and supports.

Implements educational support programs designed by professionals, such as Speech Language Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Audiologists.

Provides basic personal care, such as feeding, dressing and toileting, administering medication, use of mobility devices, lift and transfer.

Implements individual medical care/nursing care plans in school- or community-based locations.

Maintains regular communications with the supervising teacher, inclusive team teachers, counselors and/or case managers, and other team members.

With guidance of classroom teacher, inclusive team teachers, counselors and/or case managers observes and records student progress, and maintains detailed written records (i.e., scatterplot).

Operates standard school, cafeteria/kitchen, and office equipment including computer applications, instructional aid communications, and special individualized equipment/technology such as touch chat, AAC, laptop etc.

Participates with and supervises students in specialized or integrated settings, such as regular or resource classrooms, community-based life skills training, work experience sites, etc., and including activities in the gym, pool, playground, and other community sites.

Works with students with cognitive, behavioural, emotional, communication, sensory and/or physical, health challenges and provides a supportive inclusive environment for all students.

Ability to adapt to the physical and psychological changes in students behaviour in a classroom setting by conducting a professional, knowledgeable and skills based approached in a fast paced changing environment.

May be required to transport students.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
