Education Assistant III (Autism)

The Burnaby School District is seeking qualified Education Assistants III (Autism) for Regular, Temporary or On-Call positions.

Education Assistants III (Autism) are responsible for providing support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in and out of the classroom, and within the community.

  • Assist in the planning, implementation and review of the student's Individual Education Plans (IEP), positive behavior support plan and safely plan.
  • Reinforces the educational program by tutoring, adapting, or modifying classroom materials to meet the specialized needs of students with ASD.
  • Provides personal care assistance, such as toileting, feeding, diapering, and dressing.
  • Provides physical assistance, such as wheelchair maneuvering, positioning, lifting and transferring.
  • Collects assessment data and utilizes data to document progress and for decision making regarding the goals and objectives in the student's IEP. Prepares written reports, communication logs and classroom materials.
To be considered, candidates must have the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a Certificate / Diploma with focus on empirically supported approaches to supporting students with ASD or an equivalent certification plus 1,000 hours home team / Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) training and work experience documented by a Professional Consultant.
  • One (1) year of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience;
  • Thorough knowledge of ASD and characteristics of effective interventions such as ABA.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students with ASD.
  • Working knowledge of adaptive / assistive technology related to work performed including computers, wheelchairs, and medical equipment.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) would be an asset.

Hourly Rate: $36.36 per hour.
