Job summary

Delta School District is seeking Education Assistants for casual on-call positions to support inclusive learning environments across its schools. You will assist teachers in delivering curriculum, support students with diverse needs, and help maintain equity and student success.

Responsibilities include implementing educational plans, basic personal care, data recording, and collaboration with the school team.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of secondary or equivalent; post-secondary Education Assistant program preferred.
  • 1 year recent related experience supporting students with diverse needs.
  • Able to implement positive behaviour supports and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Physically able to perform duties including mobility and lifting.
  • Able to work independently and with guidance in a team setting.
  • Proficient with standard school equipment and software.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Patience and ability to foster rapport with students.
  • Comfort with evolving technology and assistive devices.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and safety procedures.
  • CPI and Non Violent Crisis Intervention certification.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafe BC and WHMIS regulations.
  • Some roles may require language other than English.

SUMMARY

Reports to the Principal and/or a District Administrator, Inclusive Learning, and works under the direction of the classroom teacher(s). Education Assistants participate as a valuable member of a team in the ongoing implementation of inclusive learning opportunities, and play a key role with the classroom teacher in maintaining a culture of equity and success for all students.

DUTIES

1. Assists in developing students' ability to access curriculum-based learning opportunities using universal/essential strategies with increasing independence.

2. Assists the teacher with the implementation of educational plans such as IEPs, AIPs, Safety Plans, and Positive Behaviour Support Plans, including ABA-based educational plans.

3. Provides basic personal care, such as feeding, dressing and toileting, administering medication, use of mobility devices, lift and transfer.

4. Implements individual medical care/nursing care plans in school- or community-based locations.

5. Maintains regular communications with the supervising teacher and other team members.

6. With guidance of classroom teacher/case manager, observes and records student progress, and maintains detailed written records (i.e., scatterplot, behaviour analysis, administration of medication).

7. Operates standard school, cafeteria/kitchen, and office equipment including computer applications, instructional aid communications, and special individualized equipment/technology

8. Participates with and supervises students in specialized or integrated settings, such as regular or resource classrooms, community-based life skills training, work experience sites, etc., and including activities in the gym, pool, playground, and other community sites.

9. Works with students with cognitive, behavioural, emotional, communication, sensory and/or physical, health challenges.

10. May be required to transport students.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Successful completion of a secondary school graduation program or equivalent. Completion of a recognized post-secondary education assistant program, including or supplemented by training related to specific diagnoses such as ASD, diabetes, chronic health impairment, conflict resolution, and non-violent crisis intervention.

2. 1 year recent, related experience specific to the needs of students with cognitive, behavioural, emotional, communication, sensory and/or physical, health challenges.

3. Proven ability to implement positive behaviour intervention techniques, as well as flexibility in response to student behaviours (e.g., adjusting and adapting strategies).

4. Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.

5. Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of the classroom/specialized teacher.

6. Ability to operate a variety of office and school equipment including equipment specific to the needs of the student(s).

7. Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively and use judgement when providing information.

8. Ability to use patience, tolerance, and understanding in developing and maintaining a rapport with students, and in resolving problems or conflicts that may arise.

9. Remains current with changing technology, and diagnosis-specific approaches and equipment.

10. Knowledge of basic first aid.

11. Current CPI and Non Violent Crisis Intervention.

12. Knowledge of WorkSafe BC and WHMIS procedures and regulations. Safe work practices.

13. Some positions may require the knowledge of a language other than English.

14. Some positions may require Braille, Sign Language or deaf/blind-specific instructional communication strategies.

15. Some positions may require a valid BC driver’s license.
