Job summary

School District 57 (Prince George) seeks an Education Assistant 3 (Behaviour) to provide specialized support for students with autism, sensory processing challenges, and behavioural needs. You will help implement IEPs and foster learning, safety and inclusion in school and community activities.

Under teachers and professionals, you will support social and life skills development, use communication tools, and collaborate with families while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 and relevant coursework in exceptionalities.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience with children/youth with exceptional needs.
  • BC driver’s license may be required.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Support IEPs, especially Positive Intervention Plans (PIPs).
  • Deliver instruction to develop social communication, life skills, and social development.
  • Assist students with speech-generating devices and communication tools.
  • Develop and implement behaviour support strategies.
  • Support students during community-based learning and activities.
  • Assist with scribing and note-taking during drills and practice.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials as directed.
  • Participate in meetings with parents and professionals.
  • Observe and document student behaviour and progress.
  • Score assessments and maintain records.
  • Administer medication as assigned by school administrator.
  • Monitor and support student behaviour in various settings.
  • Foster respectful relationships with students, staff and families.
  • Report safety/behaviour concerns to principal.
  • Coordinate and supervise school events and activities.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations.

TITLE: Education Assistant 3 (Behaviour) - 27.5 Hours

DEPARTMENT: Schools

REPORTS TO: Principal

WAGE: $33.69 - $35.04 hourly wage effective July 1, 2024

POSITION NOTES: Must have Inclusive Ed EA3 Behaviour Training

Summary

Under the direction of teachers and other professionals, the Education Assistant 3 - Behaviour provides specialized support to students with severe autism, significant sensory processing challenges, and/or complex mental health needs. This role contributes to the implementation of individualized educational programs and services that foster student learning, promote positive behaviour, and support overall well-being. The Education Assistant ensures the safety, comfort, and inclusion of students both within the school environment and during community-based activities. Support may include academic assistance, development of social communication, life and social skills, and the application of positive behaviour support strategies to increase applicable life skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), particularly those involving Positive Intervention Plans (PIPs).
  • Assist in planning and delivering instruction focused on social communication, life skills, and social development to reinforce positive behaviours.
  • Support students in using specialized equipment such as speech-generating devices and personal communication tools.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of behaviour support strategies.
  • Accompany and support students during community-based learning and access activities.
  • Provide assistance with drill and practice activities, including scribing and note-taking.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials as directed.
  • Participate in meetings and conferences with parents and professionals as required.
  • Observe and document student behaviour and progress.
  • Score objective assessments and maintain accurate records.
  • Administer medication to students as assigned by the school administrator.
  • Monitor and support student behaviour in classrooms, school grounds, and during transitions.
  • Foster and promote cooperative and respectful relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Report safety and behavioural concerns to the principal or designate.
  • Organize, distribute, and collect materials and equipment for student activities.
  • Assist in the coordination and supervision of school events such as field trips and special activities.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Specialized training or coursework relevant to the needs of students with exceptionalities (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, crisis intervention, behaviour support).
  • Minimum of two years' experience working with children or youth with exceptional needs in a school, hospital, or recognized community agency, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid British Columbia driver's license may be required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in the language of instruction
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions related to IEPs and medication administration.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn to operate specialized educational and communication equipment.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to support the application of neurodiversity inclusion strategies.
Tools and Equipment Used:
  • Standard classroom and playground materials and equipment (e.g., art supplies, computers audiovisual tools, sports equipment).
  • Potentially - adaptive equipment to support inclusion and increased positive life skills
Physical Requirements:
  • Adequate vision and hearing to perform assigned duties independently.
  • Adequate physical ability to perform duties independently without permanent accommodation.
