Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent and specialized training relevant to exceptionalities (e.g., autism).
• Minimum two years' experience supporting children/youth with exceptional needs in schools or related settings.
• Ability to implement IEPs, behaviour support plans, and medication administration following school procedures.

Responsibilities

TITLE: Education Assistant 3 (Behaviour) - 27.5 Hours

DEPARTMENT: Schools

REPORTS TO: Principal

WAGE: $33.69 - $35.04 hourly wage effective July 1, 2024

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of teachers and other professionals, the Education Assistant 3 – Behaviour provides specialized support to students with severe autism, significant sensory processing challenges, and/or complex mental health needs. This role contributes to the implementation of individualized educational programs and services that foster student learning, promote positive behaviour, and support overall well-being. The Education Assistant ensures the safety, comfort, and inclusion of students both within the school environment and during community-based activities. Support may include academic assistance, development of social communication, life and social skills, and the application of positive behaviour support strategies to increase applicable life skills.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), particularly those involving Positive Intervention Plans (PIPs).
• Assist in planning and delivering instruction focused on social communication, life skills, and social development to reinforce positive behaviours.
• Support students in using specialized equipment such as speech-generating devices and personal communication tools.
• Assist in the development and implementation of behaviour support strategies.
• Accompany and support students during community-based learning and access activities.
• Provide assistance with drill and practice activities, including scribing and note-taking.
• Prepare and organize instructional materials as directed.
• Participate in meetings and conferences with parents and professionals as required.
• Observe and document student behaviour and progress.
• Score objective assessments and maintain accurate records.
• Administer medication to students as assigned by the school administrator.
• Monitor and support student behaviour in classrooms, school grounds, and during transitions.
• Foster and promote cooperative and respectful relationships with students, staff, and families.
• Report safety and behavioural concerns to the principal or designate.
• Organize, distribute, and collect materials and equipment for student activities.
• Assist in the coordination and supervision of school events such as field trips and special activities.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Completion of Grade 12
• Specialized training or coursework relevant to the needs of students with exceptionalities (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, crisis intervention, behaviour support).
• Minimum of two years' experience working with children or youth with exceptional needs in a school, hospital, or recognized community agency, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid British Columbia driver's license may be required.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in the language of instruction
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions related to IEPs and medication administration.
• Proficiency in or willingness to learn to operate specialized educational and communication equipment.
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
• Ability to support the application of neurodiversity inclusion strategies.
