Job summary

School District 57 (Prince George) is seeking an Education Assistant 3 to support physically dependent students under the direction of teachers and professionals. The role includes advanced personal care, medical or communication duties, and assisting students with drills and practice activities per an education plan.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Up to two years of specialized training/coursework relevant to identified students.
  • Two years of experience with children or youth with exceptional needs in school, hospital, or community settings.
  • May require a valid British Columbia driver’s license.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the language of instruction.
  • Ability to follow individualized education plans and dispensing of medication.
  • Ability to operate school or specialized equipment.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Job description

TITLE: EDUCATION ASSISTANT 3 - 30 Hours

DEPARTMENT: Schools

REPORTS TO: Principal

HOURLY WAGE: $33.69 - $35.04 hourly wage effective July 1, 2024

Summary

With direction from the teacher, and other professionals, the Education Assistant 3 performs advanced personal care, medical or communication duties for physically dependent students, in addition to assisting these students with specific drill and practice activities according to an education plan.

Duties
  • Performs advanced personal care duties which are specific to the child and require specialized training (e.g. catheterization using clean technique, application of complex orthotics, seizure management, specialized feeding).
  • Performs communication procedures requiring assistance with profound and complex communication difficulties.
  • Assists students in gaining independence in specific life skills.
  • Accompanies and assists students in community access activities.
  • Assists with specific drill and practice activities and note-taking activities such as scribing.
  • Assists in preparing instructional materials.
  • Participates in conferences with parents and others as directed.
  • Observes students and records these observations.
  • Scores objective tests and assignments and keeps appropriate records.
  • Administers medication to students as assigned by an administrator.
  • Monitors student behavior (academic/social) inside the school and on the grounds.
  • Promotes and fosters cooperative relationships.
  • Reports safety and discipline concerns to the principal or designate.
  • Arranges, distributes, and collects activity materials and equipment.
  • Assists in organizing and conducting school activities such as field trips, hot dog sales and other special events.
  • Performs duties in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Performs other Education Assistant duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Ability, Skills
  • Grade 12 education.
  • Requires up to two years of specialized training/coursework specific to the needs of the identified students (e.g. interpreting, Braille transcribing, medical/health procedures, intervening, relevant post-secondary coursework).
  • Two years of specific experience with children or youth with exceptional needs in a school, hospital or recognized community agency or equivalent.
  • May require a valid British Columbia driver's license.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in the language of instruction in or about the school.
  • Ability to perform individually and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to follow directions with regard to individualized education plans and the dispensing of medication.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate school and/or personalized equipment (e.g. recorder, computer, communication board, FM System, TTY, brailler, closed caption machine, hearing aides, specialized access software, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Tools and Equipment Used
  • Common classroom and playground materials/equipment (e.g. art supplies, computers, audio-visual equipment, sports equipment, etc.)
  • Child-specific equipment (e.g. computer, hearing aids, brailler, etc.)
Physical Abilities
  • Sufficient vision and hearing to perform assigned duties independently.
  • Ability to lift, transfer and assist students as required.
  • Manual dexterity.
