Job summary

British Columbia Public School Employers' Association seeks an Education Assistant 3 to support physically dependent students under teacher direction, performing advanced personal care and specialized instructional tasks in line with an education plan.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education required.
  • Up to two years of specialized training/coursework related to identified students.
  • Two years of experience with children/youth with exceptional needs in school or equivalent.
  • Valid BC driver’s license may be required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the language of instruction.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced personal care and medical/communication support per education plan.
  • Assist students with specific life skills and participate in community activities.
  • Record observations, administer medications as assigned, and maintain records.
  • Assist with materials preparation and scoring of assessments.
  • Attend conferences with parents and school staff and support field trips and events.

Job description

TITLE: EDUCATION ASSISTANT 3 - 27.5 Hours

DEPARTMENT: Schools

REPORTS TO: Principal

HOURLY WAGE: $33.69 - $35.04 hourly wage effective July 1, 2024

CHILD SPECIFIC NOTES:
SUMMARY:

With direction from the teacher, and other professionals, the Education Assistant 3 performs advanced personal care, medical or communication duties for physically dependent students, in addition to assisting these students with specific drill and practice activities according to an education plan.

DUTIES:
  • Performs advanced personal care duties which are specific to the child and require specialized training (e.g. catheterization using clean technique, application of complex orthotics, seizure management, specialized feeding).

and/or

  • Performs communication procedures requiring assistance with profound and complex communication difficulties.
  • Assists students in gaining independence in specific life skills.
  • Accompanies and assists students in community access activities.
  • Assists with specific drill and practice activities and note-taking activities such as scribing.
  • Assists in preparing instructional materials.
  • Participates in conferences with parents and others as directed.
  • Observes students and records these observations.
  • Scores objective tests and assignments and keeps appropriate records.
  • Administers medication to students as assigned by an administrator.
  • Monitors student behavior (academic/social) inside the school and on the grounds.
  • Promotes and fosters cooperative relationships.
  • Reports safety and discipline concerns to the principal or designate.
  • Arranges, distributes, and collects activity materials and equipment.
  • Assists in organizing and conducting school activities such as field trips, hot dog sales and other special events.
  • Performs duties in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Performs other Education Assistant duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, SKILLS (Education Assistant 3)
  • Grade 12 education.
  • Requires up to two years of specialized training/coursework specific to the needs of the identified students (e.g. interpreting, Braille transcribing, medical/health procedures, intervening, relevant post-secondary coursework).
  • Two years of specific experience with children or youth with exceptional needs in a school, hospital or recognized community agency or equivalent.
  • May require a valid British Columbia driver’s license.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in the language of instruction in or about the school.
  • Ability to perform individually and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to follow directions with regard to individualized education plans and the dispensing of medication.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate school and/or personalized equipment (e.g. recorder, computer, communication board, FM System, TTY, brailler, closed caption machine, hearing aids, specialized access software, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Common classroom and playground materials/equipment (e.g. art supplies, computers, audio-visual equipment, sports equipment, etc.)

Child-specific equipment (e.g. computer, hearing aides, brailler, etc.)

PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  • Sufficient vision and hearing to perform assigned duties independently.
  • Ability to lift, transfer and assist students as required.
  • Manual dexterity.
