Job summary

Imperial Oil seeks a Principal of Mine Tailings & Closure to serve as the senior technical SME for tailings, water management, reclamation and mine closure at the Kearl Oil Sands. The role provides strategic governance, supports risk‑informed decisions, and represents Imperial with regulators and industry groups.

The position is office‑based in Edmonton with occasional travel to Calgary and Kearl. You will mentor professionals, develop standards, and drive continuous technical excellence across

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Geoscience required.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or eligible for Alberta registration.
• 18+ years of experience in tailings, water management, reclamation, closure, or related fields.
• Experience in open pit mining operations and regulatory interaction.
• Ability to influence technical and business decisions without direct authority.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for tailings, water management, reclamation, and closure.
• Develop long‑range strategies and governance for tailings and closure programs.
• Represent Imperial with regulators, industry groups, and stakeholders.
• Identify emerging technologies and drive continuous improvement.
• Develop internal standards and best practices for tailings and closure.
• Mentor mining professionals and support technical leadership development.
• Review major decisions to ensure alignment with corporate objectives.
