The Consultant Engineer assists policyholders in physically protecting their large industrial and commercial properties against hazards such as fire, explosion, earthquakes, collapses, windstorms, mechanical and electrical breakdowns, among others. The role involves developing effective loss prevention solutions, managing projects to completion, and staying updated through regular technical training. Candidates can expect ongoing challenges, professional growth, and personal responsibility.

Main responsibilities

  1. Conduct on-site loss prevention evaluations to identify physical and human element risks.
  2. Quantify risks accurately at client sites to ensure appropriate attention from the account team.
  3. Secure client understanding and agreement on hazards/exposures and their potential business impacts.
  4. Assist in managing changes effectively at client locations.
  5. Implement practical risk improvements on-site.
  6. Demonstrate the unique value of FM Global's engineering capabilities.
  7. Communicate risks and data precisely.
  8. Work independently from a home office, with frequent travel using a company vehicle to client sites.

Skills and competencies

  1. Proficiency with current technology and software for engineering analysis and recommendations.
  2. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  3. Ability to convey ideas effectively to various audiences, including executives and technical personnel.
  4. Attention to detail, sound engineering judgment, and customer focus.
  5. Efficient time management with minimal supervision.
  6. Valid driver's license and eligibility to travel within the United States.

Location requirement

Must reside in Halifax.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering; membership in Engineers Nova Scotia or other provincial/territorial engineering regulators in Canada.

Experience

0-3 years in engineering, preferably in consulting, fire protection, or insurance sectors.
