South Shore Regional Centre for Education

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) practices a culturally responsive pedagogy approach, providing an inclusive, diverse, equitable, safe, and healthy education that supports learning and success both personally and academically for the 59,000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties. This area covers 5,250 square kilometres and includes 23 schools.

Qualifications, Experience, and Training:

  • Valid NS teaching license with Elementary Endorsement
  • Masters in Inclusive Education and/or Special Education or Acadia Masters in Curriculum focusing on UDL and Inclusive Education
  • Completion of Program for Aspiring Learning Support Teachers (PANLST)
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a classroom teacher programming for students with diverse needs at the elementary level
  • Recent training and experience in evidence-based programming and interventions for students with diverse needs
  • Additional training in TEACCH, STAR, Social Narratives, Social Thinking, Zones of Regulation, Interoception, and ASD online courses
  • Understanding of MTSS Framework, UDL, and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP)
  • Ability to work collaboratively in Student Planning and Support Teams
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding records and documentation

Characteristics:

  • Ability to provide program direction and assist teachers with outcomes for students with diverse needs
  • Effective communication with students, teachers, parents, community, and outside agencies

Task Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support Individual Program Plans and teaching strategies based on student needs
  • Provide direct instruction in collaboration with classroom teachers
  • Participate in Teaching Support and Student Planning Teams
  • Assist students with Assistive Technology and AAC systems
  • Support transitions for students with developmental disabilities
  • Implement Universal Design for Learning within MTSS framework
  • Support assessment, reporting, and evidence-based programming
  • Model teaching strategies and support staff as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality (TIENET)
  • Engage in professional development, including NVCI or Low Arousal approaches
  • Comply with Occupational Health & Safety regulations
  • Understand policies, guidelines, and rights related to individuals with special needs
  • Perform other duties as required
