SAIT’s School of Manufacturing and Automation, and School of Transportation provides the skills-based training and development to prepare students for a career in Alberta's rapidly growing transportation, manufacturing and automation sectors. The Opportunity

The School of Manufacturing & Automation provides practical and applied skills training to meet the needs of Alberta's rapidly growing manufacturing, automation, oil and gas, and service sectors. The School of Transportation has been a part of SAIT since its inception in 1916, with its original discipline of Motor Mechanics. Now, over 100 years later, we provide hands-on, practical education for automotive, aviation, heavy equipment, and rail careers. We are currently recruiting for a casual/hourly Ed-Lab Tech l - Student Worker position. Reporting to the Academic Chair, this position provides maintenance and service support to the Welding, Machinist, and Millwright programs with possible other departments in Transportation and Manufacturing as required.

Note: This is a casual/hourly position.


The Role
  • Stock consumables and prepare and stock associated materials.
  • Process (cut & shear) metal coupons for labs.
  • Assist with maintenance & repairs to operational and non-operational equipment to OEM standards such as welding equipment, diesel engines, and transmissions.
  • Prepare and maintain demonstration equipment for the instructors in the labs. Provide technical support to the sections.
  • Monitor & maintain hand tools, power tools and tool boards and maintain inventory of all tooling.
  • Adhere to safety legislation, guidelines, and safety standards as required by government agencies or regulators, and those communicated by management and supervisors.
  • Follow all SAIT general Health & Safety regulations, rules, codes of practice, standard operating procedures in the HSME Manual.
  • Assist with fabricating training aids and stands for demonstration units.
  • Assist in setting up lab environments for instructors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills, & Experience
  • Must be currently enrolled as a domestic student in either the SAIT Welding and Fabrication Technology Diploma or the Machining Technology Diploma, and participating in the Work Integrated Learning Co-Op.
  • Minimum High School Diploma is required.
  • Must have strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organizational skill and time management are required.
  • Must be fluent in English reading and vocabulary.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude and the ability to supervise others.
  • Class 5 license – abstract required.
  • Must be able to safely lift 20 kilograms, extended walking, bending, etc.
  • Must be willing to be trained in the following; SAIT COR Safety program, First Aid (Emergency), WHMIS and any section specific training.
  • Ability to adapt to situations such as unexpected workloads is required.
  • Intermediate level proficiency in MS Office: Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
