The Outland Youth Employment Program is a national network providing innovative education, training, and work opportunities for Indigenous youth. Our program includes an award-winning six-week land-based summer program. Support services are available across Canada, with summer programs currently in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia. Since 2000, OYEP has promoted equity and opportunity for Indigenous youth and communities.

Job Description

WHAT’S THE JOB?

As a remote Head Cook, you will play a vital role in our youth program's operation. You will be responsible for all aspects of food production, including meal planning, safe food preparation, and maintaining cleanliness of the remote kitchen and dining areas. The camp operates for 6 weeks during July and August with 30 youth participants on site. The Head Cook will live on site with the youth during this period to provide all meals and snacks, maintaining a warm, welcoming, and professional disposition both on and off duty.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Be prepared and ready for work each day
  • Prepare meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Clean the kitchen and dishes
  • Serve food
  • Plan meals
  • Order and receive food supplies
  • Maintain HACCP and temperature logs
  • Follow Outland's health and safety regulations
  • Communicate with the Camp Supervisor about daily and future plans
  • Assist with closing ceremonies and related activities

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Individuals interested in culinary arts, education, training, or social support environments
  • Current Food Safe certification
  • Level 1 First Aid certification (asset)
  • Camp cooking experience (asset)
  • High standards for cleanliness and organization in the kitchen
  • Comfort living in remote environments
  • Experience managing an industrial kitchen
  • Ability to handle physical demands such as lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods
