Role Overview

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Project Controls, the Project Controls Specialist is responsible for controls (e.g., approvals, tracking, forecasting, and management reporting and analysis) on large construction projects related to cost, schedule, risk, lessons learned, and change management.

This role is based out of Kakabeka, ON.

What You Will Be Working On

  • Implementing and maintaining controls on large construction projects for cost, schedule, risk, lessons learned, and change management. Ensuring expenditure approval and project management procedures are followed and planning and scheduling deliverables are completed.
  • Providing input or developing high-level cost estimates during execution to validate contractor change requests.
  • Drafting monthly executive-level project progress reports and quarterly project Board reports.
  • Providing monthly project accruals and forecasts to Finance.
  • Training contractors on project control systems for progress reporting.
  • Ensuring codes for Construction Site Cost Reporting, Tax assessment, and Asset Management are evaluated during project execution.
  • Creating Expenditure Authorization and Purchase Requisition as initial steps in issuing Purchase Orders.
  • Participating in execution planning and assembling the Project Execution Plan.
  • Analyzing and recommending project schedule, cost estimates, and forecasts.
  • Providing input to the Project Controls’ plans and directions.
  • Overseeing system enhancements and maintenance, and recommending process improvements for major power plant asset construction.
  • Developing strategies to optimize contractor performance and minimize claims.
  • Recommending organizational structure improvements.
  • Identifying cost and schedule risks and suggesting action plans.
  • Tracking and analyzing risks, establishing their probability.
  • Demonstrating HSE orientation and adhering to safety procedures.
  • Ensuring effective communication and teamwork with peers.
  • Providing support and building relationships with Project Managers and Senior Managers across Operations, Construction, and Engineering.

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years experience as a Project Control Specialist.
  • P. Eng and PMP preferred.
  • Experience with :
  • Cost Control Systems and Applications
  • Planning and scheduling tools (Primavera)
  • Risk Assessment tools (FCD, @Risk)
  • Reporting tools (MS Word, Excel)
  • Document Control Systems (SharePoint)
  • Ability to develop project execution plans.
  • Experience in developing cost estimates / forecasts and project schedules based on plant design concepts.
  • Experience training contractors in progress reporting.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships.
  • Managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A sense of urgency and commitment to goals, capable of working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills at multiple levels.
