Job description

Sedgman is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its growing Mining & Minerals business and to support our North American offices. This role will be based in Vancouver, BC, or Montreal, Quebec, reporting to the General Counsel in Brisbane, Australia.

The ideal candidate will have experience in engineering and the construction industry, preferably in the mining sector, with a strong understanding of risks associated with feasibility studies, detailed design, and project delivery. Proven experience in providing accurate, commercial, and timely legal advice to manage legal/contractual risks is essential, along with developing and monitoring risk management strategies.

This role includes managing day-to-day legal functions, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements, and upholding corporate governance policies.

What does this role involve?
Key responsibilities include:
  1. Act as the primary legal contact for North American projects and contracts within the region.
  2. Provide practical advice on engineering and construction law to support critical business decisions.
  3. Offer timely legal guidance on daily matters.
  4. Review contract conditions and subcontract qualifications, advising on compliance issues.
  5. Negotiate and draft contract amendments, and manage contract closures.
  6. Ensure contracts comply with Sedgman risk management policies before signing.
  7. Implement Sedgman training on contract fundamentals.
  8. Assist in developing responses to issues during construction and operational phases, focusing on early dispute resolution.
  9. Align subcontract documents with main contracts and coordinate with the procurement team.
  10. Support legal and governance requirements alongside the General Counsel and Company Secretary.
  11. Mentor legal team members and law clerks.
What are we looking for in our future team member?
Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor of Law, admitted to a Bar for at least 8 years.
  2. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in engineering and construction law.
  3. Experience with EPCM/EPC contracts, construction, and commercial law.
  4. Excellent communication skills, capable of simplifying complex legal concepts.
  5. Knowledge of mining industry practices, partnerships, and major project delivery methods is a plus.
  6. Strong negotiation, analytical, organizational, and presentation skills.
  7. Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities.
  8. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
  9. Eligible to work in Canada without sponsorship.
