Program Overview – Child Care & Family Services (118 Enderby Road, Toronto)

The ECA casual staff are responsible for caring for children in group settings by assisting other team members in planning, supervising, and implementing the daily program. This position requires providing appropriate guidance, encouragement, and support to children, families, staff, students, and volunteers, while being flexible, resourceful, sensitive, and respectful of individual needs.

What You Will Do
  1. Guide and care for children in groups, assist in planning and implementing daily programs aligned with the Ministry of Education’s policies, pedagogy, curriculum, and the City of Toronto’s Quality Care Requirements.
  2. Adhere to policies of the Child Care & Family Services Unit, WoodGreen, and comply with regulations such as the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, and City of Toronto’s AQI, including maintaining legal staff:child ratios and working closely with casual staff during absences.
  3. Set reasonable limits based on the child's developmental stage, providing support both individually and in groups, including extra support when needed.
  4. Recognize and address unusual behavior, reporting challenges to the Manager and collaborating with professionals as necessary.
  5. Work as part of a team, participating in daily program activities with other staff.
  6. Record daily attendance, manage medical information, and report any concerns or absences appropriately.
  7. Ensure the safety, health, and hygiene of children, including responding to emergencies, monitoring health concerns, and following proper procedures for diapering, toileting, fire, and emergency protocols.
  8. Supervise children during outdoor activities, ensuring safety on outings.
  9. Build and maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians, providing updates, assessments, and developmental feedback.
  10. Maintain and organize equipment and furnishings, assess needs, and make purchase recommendations.
  11. Ensure the program environment is orderly, inviting, and conducive to learning.
  12. Provide supervision at all times, working scheduled shifts to meet program needs, including shift rotations.
  13. Report signs of physical or mental abuse to authorities.
  14. Develop effective working relationships with internal and external contacts, including community resources.
  15. Check outdoor facilities for safety, report hazards, and coordinate cleaning and maintenance.
  16. Perform housekeeping duties such as cleaning, disinfecting, laundry, and food service as required.
What You Bring to the Team
  • Early Childhood Assistant Certificate or proof of completion of one year of an Early Childhood Education program at a recognized Ontario College.
  • Experience in licensed childcare, including practicum placements.
  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification.
  • Up-to-date health assessments, immunization records, and TB tests.

  • Ability to work cooperatively, exercise professional judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Physical ability to lift children and handle moderately heavy items, and stamina to stand for extended periods.
  • Willingness to work in conditions involving exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, noise, and weather elements.
