About the job

As part of the Insurance Premium Tax section within the Compliance Branch, you will independently conduct field audits of taxpayers, including collaborating with colleagues to conduct audits for large and complex corporate taxpayers. In this role, you will :

  • review taxpayer books and records to make sure they follow tax laws
  • examine business accounting systems, financial statements, and complex transactions
  • research relevant tax laws, court cases, and publications
  • ensure audit documents are created according to standards and policies
  • meet with taxpayers and their representatives to talk about audit findings and any issues with tax compliance
  • suggest referrals to other government areas and jurisdictions for further action, and testify in court cases as needed

What you bring to the team

Mandatory :

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, or successful completion of a recognized university degree or college diploma, plus or including courses in Introductory Financial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, Advanced Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, either Cost Accounting or Management Accounting, and one additional course in Auditing, Taxation, Cost Accounting, Management Accounting or Finance

Candidates will be asked to indicate on their transcripts which courses meet the position's academic requirements. Candidates who obtained their qualifications outside Canada will be asked to provide proof that these qualifications are recognized as equivalent in Canada.

Accounting, tax and auditing knowledge

You have knowledge of and experience with :

  • accounting practices and policies, as well as audit standards and procedures
  • Corporate Tax compliance within a public practice accounting firm, a governmental tax administration entity, or a business / industry relating to large and complex taxpayers

You have the ability to :

  • interpret and apply tax regulations and legislation, including the Electricity Act, the Ontario Corporations Tax Act, the Taxation Act 2007, the Income Tax Act (Canada) and other Provincial Acts

Communication and interpersonal skills

You can :

  • prepare audit working papers and letters to taxpayers and their representatives
  • present and discuss audit file reviews with auditors and managers
  • manage the audit relationship with taxpayers and their representatives

Analytical and research skills

You can :

  • research financial audit records and tax publications, such as tax court cases
  • recognize tax loopholes and tax-avoidance schemes and refer to the group manager

Technology skills

  • you have experience with computer software and accounting systems to understand taxpayers' digital accounting records and create audit documents
