Job Description

The Mechanical Engineering Specialist can design, improve, and plan the tools and equipment needed for quality and efficient ship construction and repair, ensuring they meet specifications and regulatory requirements. In this position, the specialist will provide technical support and lead projects and tasks supporting the Tooling and Equipment Department's daily operations, ensuring production requirements are fulfilled. The role will additionally be responsible for analyzing business trends, managing assigned tasks and project budgets, developing custom reports, and identifying opportunities to improve efficiencies and cost savings.

Responsibilities
  1. Lead tasks supporting the Tooling and Equipment team’s daily operations to meet and exceed internal customer expectations.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of manufacturing and build processes and standardize HSL equipment to support production needs.
  3. Actively liaise with the vendor industry to test new and improved tooling and equipment to realize efficiency and cost savings.
  4. Ensure ISI equipment meets applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  5. Monitor and maintain budgets.
  6. Provide support for tooling and equipment-related needs (hydraulic, ventilation, industrial gas, mechanical equipment, welding, etc.).
  7. Engage with production teams, sponsors, and stakeholders, leading project management activities of various equipment and technical projects from conceptual design to commissioning and start-up.
  8. Oversee capital equipment purchases: ensure quality and delivery, develop budgets and timelines, coordinate logistics, installations, commissioning, training, and complete equipment handovers to the maintenance team. Communicate effectively to demonstrate positive results.
  9. Perform analytics and reporting of inventory, trends, and operational processes to identify opportunities and recommend changes to improve costs and efficiencies supporting long-term strategy.
  10. Lead or support various business initiatives, including facility improvements, continuous improvement projects within the production environment for tooling and equipment, and developing equipment standards for the use of tools and equipment.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Technology, with some work experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and change management.
  • Experience in an industrial environment; knowledge of naval design and construction methods is considered an asset.
  • Experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to work independently or with multidisciplinary teams.
