The Wind Technician position requires local travel within the hub. The Wind Technician is a critical and active role to maintain optimal function and output at the wind site by working daily on turbine operations, safety, quality control and warranty repair(s). The Wind Technician partners and communicates with the Site Lead and Manager to execute on contract requirements and timelines and ensures alignment with GE excellence!
Job Description
Please note: This is not a remote position. The work location for this position includes all wind sites within Hub ON1 in the Raliegh/Chatam ON area. You are expected to work at all sites within this Hub and report to work at any site within this Hub as assigned by your manager. Relocation to the area is required.
Roles And Responsibilities
Responsible for Mechanical disassembly, inspection and assembly of Wind Gearboxes. You will report to the Shop Operations Leader.
In Addition You Will
Exchange Bearings and gears as per engineering drawings and remanufacturing specifications
Be able to perform standard mechanical assembly procedures, perform rework, and repair of gearbox components and systems to drawing specifications Downtower in the repair shop or Uptower in the Wind Turbine.
Repair and Assembly of WTG 750KW, -5/-6MW and -x MW turbines.
Maintain proper handling of GE tools and equipment.
Occasionally required to work in tight areas, ladders, scissor lift, greater than 4m high off ground.
Occasionally required to perform repair operations uptower
Possess thorough knowledge and ability to use all tools associated with assembling units according to required specifications:
lifting equipment, wall and overhead cranes
Hydraulic and electric Torque tools
Specific hydraulic pullers for disassembly operations
Other Tools included but not limited to impact drills, magnetic drills, drill press, angle grinders, sanders, basic hand tools (manual and pneumatic)
Read and understand mechanical layout, engineering drawings
Follow all EH&S guidelines and policies
Follow good environmental practices and waste management procedures. Segregate waste in the pertinent containers at the Repair Hall.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED, and
1+ year(s) experience as a Wind Technician/Wind Mechanic, or
Completed Wind Certificate Program/Associates or
Post-Secondary Degree in Energy, or equivalent mechanical or electrical work experience, and
Passing a Technical Knowledge Assessment, and
Basic computer skills
Desired Characteristics
Certified in the use of lifting equipment, such as overhead and wall cranes, as well as lifting methods and practices by using appropriate slings, chains, hooks, etc.
Trained on Bearings assembly practices, including clearance and preload calculation.
Trained in the use of sealing and adhesives for bearings assembly
Trained in hoses manufacturing and testing.
Training on tightening practices and tools.
Ability to read, understand and follow mechanical and electrical engineering drawings
Self-motivated to work with minimal guidance and willingness to learn from others
Ability and Willingness to work at heights and confined spaces, repairing gearboxes uptower in the Nacelle enclosure if required
Ability and willingness to work various shifts and overtime on short notice, in order to meet business needs
Ability to follow instructions and be willing to work outside under adverse weather conditions
Experience working in a Wind Gearbox Repair Shop is a plus
