A leading company in clinical biochemistry is seeking a qualified individual to oversee mass spectrometry services. The role involves managing test menu expansion, supporting troubleshooting, and collaborating with laboratory scientists. The ideal candidate will have a PhD and extensive experience in mass spectrometry, along with strong communication and leadership skills. This position offers a full-time role with opportunities for involvement in provincial initiatives and clinical research.
Key responsibilities include comprehensive MS experience and knowledge to oversee MS services with a focus on endocrinology and toxicology, aiming to improve and expand the current test menu. The role involves overseeing and supporting troubleshooting and method development on ten mass spectrometers, in collaboration with three laboratory scientists. The incumbent will represent and support Southern Alberta on provincial initiatives and projects, such as instrument implementations, LIS and middleware activities, quality assurance, and participation in working groups. They will contribute to the team reviewing and approving clinical referred-out testing for Southern Alberta. Additional responsibilities may include liaising with clinical users regarding medical and operational issues, participating in on-call services, and evaluating and implementing instrumentation, software, and testing (e.g., large target drug screen panels, steroids, plasma/urine metanephrines). The role involves working with Toxicologists and supporting safety, test utilization, and quality assurance programs for clinical biochemistry. The candidate will provide input on resource requirements for laboratory medical and operational planning, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support clinical research, and teach, mentor, and supervise laboratory medicine learners. They will also contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, quality improvement, and strategic planning.

Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate (PhD) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or related disciplines, and hold a current certification (or eligibility) by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent (e.g., American Board of Clinical Chemistry). They must have comprehensive experience and knowledge in the field of mass spectrometry.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Demonstrates strong communication skills, applied problem solving, critical thinking, organizational ability, leadership skills, and the capacity to work independently and within teams in a fast-paced, changing environment. A strong track record of collegiality with coworkers, academic accomplishments, and ongoing continuing education and research in clinical biochemistry are also essential.
