Job description

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education (CBVRCE) oversees the public school system within Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students across 38 schools.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • A valid Nova Scotia teacher's license
  • A Master's of Education in Instructional/Educational Leadership or an equivalent leadership degree is preferred
  • Previous administrative experience is preferred
  • At least five years of successful teaching experience in a public school
  • Demonstrated instructional leadership experience is preferred
  • Proven leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to utilize applicable technology to balance teaching, learning, and administrative functions
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in strategic planning and instructional program implementation
  • Commitment to inclusive education for all students
  • Ability to promote professional growth among staff through professional development
  • Expertise in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Skills in facilities management, record keeping, financial management, and supervising staff
  • Ability to fulfill duties as outlined in Section 38 of the Education Act

A Vice-Principal may perform any duties assigned to a Principal, including those prescribed by the Education Act and regulations, such as:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Principal in maintaining a positive, safe, respectful learning and working environment.
  2. Help establish a school-wide vision focused on high standards and academic success.
  3. Support leadership development, manage people, data, and processes.
  4. Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, community, and external agencies.
  5. Complete required documentation for the Centre and Department of Education.
  6. Assist in staffing processes, including needs assessment and recruitment.
  7. Support attendance initiatives and supervise staff performance and personnel matters.
  8. Contribute to professional growth through planning and feedback.
  9. Ensure proper evaluation methods for students and staff.
  10. Monitor organizational systems such as student records, attendance, budgets, and timetables.
  11. Maintain school safety and security.
  12. Oversee financial records and ensure policy compliance.
  13. Support adherence to all relevant policies and procedures.

Terms and conditions of employment follow the Education Entities Non-union Compensation Framework and the Public School Administrators Association of Nova Scotia. The position is classified in payband 12, with a salary range of $105,065 to $131,331. Teaching components may vary annually based on staffing and enrollment.
