Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Alberta Environmental Services group is currently seeking an Environmental Planner to work within our Assessment, Permitting and Compliance Team.

We are relationship builders who have established excellent working relationships with regulators and clients in western Canada. Our regulatory knowledge, environmental assessment experience and scientific expertise allow us to help our clients develop the most effective and innovative approach to meeting their regulatory and permitting needs. In this position you will be exposed to an exciting array of projects in various stages of their lifecycle including permitting, approval requirements, and construction and post-construction support. Typical projects include small to large-scale provincial and federal pipelines, oil and gas facilities, and power-related projects (including renewables) as well as urban development projects. We are always growing as we continue to adapt to the changing environment in which we work and are excited to work on a number of exciting projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

1. Coordinate with teams of technical environmental and engineering specialists to support the environmental assessment, application development and permitting processes.
2. Assess habitat condition within natural environment and conduct or coordinate field surveys. Collect, maintain, and analyze ecological data.
3. Plan and implement ecological restoration projects and park management plans.
4. Coordinate with engineering disciplines and other biological disciplines to prepare deliverables.
5. Work directly with clients to provide strategic environmental advice and project management throughout all stages of a project’s lifecycle including approval, construction, post-construction and operational management within both provincial (AB and BC) and federal regulatory frameworks.
6. Create and provide review of environmental assessments and technical documents that support regulatory permitting.
7. Author environmental assessments and technical documents that support regulatory submissions and construction support.
8. Prepare budgets, manage scope changes, establish schedules and ensure that project work is carried out within agreed time-frames and on budget.
9. Contribute to business development activities, including proposals, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with existing and prospective clients.
10. Support and ensure implementation of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work and coordinate with HSSE professionals during the execution of all phases of project planning and implementation.
11. Communicate and collaborate with other environmental and regulatory specialists to ensure consistency in project execution.
12. Participate in team and independent based work.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

1. Ability to work with initiative, professionalism and confidentiality, multi-task and adapt to change in a very dynamic environment.
2. Strong understanding of provincial (AB, BC) and federal regulations, permitting requirements and environmental assessment processes.
3. Demonstrated effective writing and communication skills.
4. Strong attention to detail.
5. Proven problem-solving skills and out-of-the-box thinking.
6. Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of audiences/technical backgrounds including internal and external clients and regulatory agencies.
7. Ability to acquire, review and analyze biophysical data to develop or support the development of recommendations to provide to internal project teams and/or clients.
8. Ability to act as field lead for wetland assessments and/or wildlife surveys.

Your Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences or in Environmental Studies.

Field identification skills for wetland assessments and/or wildlife identification skills. Other biophysical field skills considered an asset.

Proficient with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Minimum of five (5) years of experience.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include remote work and exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
