Job description

Position Description

Immanuel Lutheran School (ILS) is a mission of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Virginia, right outside our Nation’s Capital. We are seeking a 6-8th grade Math & Science teacher. This teacher would also serve as the homeroom teacher for 8th grade.

ILS is a classical Christian school serving grades Jr.K-8 that endeavors to teach children the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. As a classical school, it draws on the understanding of the three stages of learning—grammar, logic, and rhetoric—to help children build a base of knowledge, learn to ask critical questions, and build cogent arguments. Divided into an Upper School (grades 5-8) and Lower School (grades Jr.K-4), Immanuel offers a joyful team environment where teachers are excited to share a love of Christ and a thirst for knowledge with their students every day of the school year. One of the joys of having a school that serves children as young as four all the way through 14 is that an Upper School teacher has the opportunity to help their students see themselves as role models and leaders for the younger children.

Upper School mathematics at ILS consists of the Saxon Math curriculum for the 6th(Saxon 7/6) and 7th( Saxon 8/7) grades and Jacob’s Elementary Algebra for the 8th grade. Using the Saxon curriculum and some supplements, we aim to give students a wholistic sense of arithmetic and numeracy, as well as the basic tools to succeed in algebra in the 8th grade. There, students use unknown variables to generalize their knowledge of arithmetic operations and begin serious study of functions, factoring, and graphs.

The Science program involves, among other things, teaching Earth Science. This teacher would also direct the school’s science fair and aid students in developing their experiments for that science fair. There is also an annual Science Camp overnight field trip that is the highlight of many Upper School students’ time at ILS. An interest in expanding the school’s Science curriculum would be a plus.

Applicants should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and should be committed Christians. More information about Immanuel Lutheran Church and School can be found atimmanuelalexandria.org. Applicants should send a cover letter and CV to teach@immanuelalexandria.org.
