Position Type: 80% Term

Description:

The Elementary Teacher is responsible for teaching and providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.

Note:

The school has P-5 students in one classroom. The successful candidate will be required to teach multi-grade students and all subject areas, including specialist subjects (Physical Education, Music, French). Experience teaching multiple grades and subjects is an asset.

Position requires daily travel on a ferry to/from Chester. The ferry ride is approximately 1 hour each way. Ferry service may be suspended for various reasons, potentially resulting in an overnight stay on the island.

It takes approximately 15 minutes to walk to the school from the wharf, and the successful candidate should be prepared to walk in all weather conditions.

The position may require the successful candidate to be the sole adult at the school for part or all of the day. Strong behaviour management skills are an asset.

There is a possibility of additional substitute days.

Hours:

The position is 4 days a week (Monday and Tuesday are required plus 2 additional days). The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Take the 7:00 am ferry from Chester, arriving on Big Tancook Island at approximately 8:00 am.
  • Take the 4:30 pm ferry back to Chester on Monday and Tuesday, arriving at approximately 5:30 pm.

On two other days, the candidate will take the 1:30 pm ferry to Chester, arriving at approximately 2:30 pm. The specific days will be mutually agreed upon with the administrator.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification
  • Bachelor of Education - Elementary
Abilities / Competencies:
  • University-level courses in special or inclusive education
  • Professional development in Program Support, literacy education, and teaching French, Phys Ed, and Music
  • Experience teaching grades P-5
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with school and inter-agency teams and support early intervention strategies
  • Proven ability to work as part of school program planning and multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy and developmental trauma
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies
  • Non-violent crisis intervention skills
  • Ability to demonstrate teaching strategies and coach staff
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Experience planning training and professional development for students with behaviors of concern
  • Ability to work with diverse cultural and racial backgrounds
  • Valuing others' voices and contributions, and openness to feedback
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire
