A leading local government organization is seeking a Solid Waste Compliance Officer to ensure effective delivery of Solid Waste Services. The ideal candidate will have relevant education and experience in compliance and enforcement within a local government context. This permanent full-time position offers a competitive hourly pay rate and a comprehensive benefits package.
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is located on the beautiful central east coast of Vancouver Island, incorporating the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, along with seven unincorporated electoral areas between Cassidy to the south and Bowser to the north. The RDN is situated within the traditional territories of several First Nations, including Snuneymuxw, Snaw-Naw-As, and Qualicum First Nations, and recognizes their rich cultural heritage. The RDN benefits from inclusive First Nations governance with strong collaboration at all levels to address important and pressing issues. The region is home to approximately 170,000 residents and is experiencing rapid growth, driven by a mild coastal climate, diverse ecosystems, landscapes from the Salish Sea to rugged mountains, easy access to outdoor recreation, and a high quality of life.
Reporting to the Superintendent, Solid Waste Planning, the Solid Waste Compliance Officer contributes to the effective delivery of Solid Waste Services through investigating, identifying, and resolving solid waste bylaw violations, including applying surcharges and fines as needed. This position supports the department by assisting team members in their duties to meet service expectations, departmental goals, and objectives. The ideal candidate will have post-secondary education in a related field with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a local government setting, including at least one (1) year in compliance and enforcement work. Candidates must possess Level 1 Bylaw Enforcement certification, Survival First Aid courses, and a valid Class 5 Driver's License. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. This is a permanent full-time (35 hours per week) union position. The 2024 pay rate ranges from $38.17 to $40.18 per hour. The position offers an attractive benefits package as outlined in the collective agreement between the RDN and CUPE Local 401.
